A thin, grey light seeps through the jungle gloom, glinting off the haze pooled among the tree roots. The jungle is quiet in this last hour before dawn, only the soft chirring of insects and the occasional rustle of some creature either retiring to its nest or slowly waking within it. And yet, you are not alone. Shadows seem to shift at the edge of your sight, and the prickle at the back of your neck tells you something is watching. Assessing. Turn a slow circle, but there's nothing to be seen except early light and rising mist.

Mists?

Turn again, rapidly, watch the drifing haze. Following air currents, or some other prompting? Are they drawing closer? For an instant, you would swear you feel warm breath on your back, the barest brush of something solid and alive, but when you turn it is gone. The mists are gone. Only the growing light remains, and a mark in the soft ground like the pad of some great beast.
