Eons ago, Gryphons and Phoenixes lived in peace. But the existence of the Gryphons was threatened by an imminent explosion – a volcano that threatened to take Gryphons to the brink of existence. Afraid for their future, the Gryphons approached the Phoenixes, asking them to help them, for they were fire creatures who could live among the flames. The Phoenixes agreed, giving the spirit of fire to the Gryphons, creating a whole new breed.
Thus when the fire and ash came, the Gryphons survived, their feathers immune to the blaze. When the worst was over, the spirit of fire left them, and the old breeds of gryphons returned – the gold, the black, the brown, the grey. But the spirit of fire had existed within them for so long that the phoenixes, the essence of fire, became compatible with gryphons. Nowadays, the phoenixes and Gryphons celebrate the pact they made eons ago, by choosing the other as their lifelong mates.
