Combined with the Latin words sol for "Sun" and sistere for "To Stand Still", the word "solstice" refers to the two times a year when the Sun appears to stand still in the sky. These are the summer solstice (in the Northern Hemisphere, usually occurring on or around June 21st) and the winter solstice (in the Northern Hemisphere, usually occurring on or around December 21st). These dates mark the longest and shortest days of the year, respectively.
