The Greyjoys rule over the Iron Islands off the coast of Westeros. They were once a proud raiding people, known for being tough warriors, and several years after Robert Baratheon took the throne of Westeros, Balon Greyjoy set to work regaining their independence. It was a futile attempt that ended in him losing his two eldest sons, Rodrik and Maron, and was made to swear fealty, yet again, to the Iron Throne of Westeros. To ensure his loyalty, Eddard Stark took Balon's last and youngest son, Theon, to be his ward and hostage should the man decide to rebel once more.
