As compared to many of the other creatures, most people don't have a particular fondness for the narwhal. To many its gray, slick skin is unattractive and dull compared to the fantastic others they share the world with. Unicorns are adored and petted by the score while their sea variants are shunned by contrast.
Downtrodden and Despised were sold to Elly as full adults because they were not wanted. She took them in and placed them in the underground caverns of Moy Mell to live a happier life with the huge narwhal pod below. Even so they are given to sighing frequently and floating forlornly about the ice that forms atop the chill waters of the caverns.
