The morning sun peeped over the curve of Nutmeg's flank to tickle little Mocknut's nose. Sneezing, Mocknut raised his head and watched his breath steam on the chilled morning. Nutmeg his doting mother nuzzled her son lovingly while Bitternut his proud father looked on. Slowly Mocknut stretched and stood, swishing his fuzzy tail stub as he rose reluctantly from his mother's warm side. Making small perfect hoof prints on the lightly frosted ground Mocknut followed his parents around and between the hickory trees of their fall brushed forest of red and yellow. Mocknut was determined to find a perfect hickory nut to give to his mother to plant for it was part of their function as hickory minicorns to choose and plant the nuts that would be the next great trees in their forest.
