Re-writing this because it's painfully terrible in the first version.

Chapter 1

“Misa, stop being so paranoid. No one is outside.” A thin and tall woman stirred a pot filled with vegetable stew, ladling some into a bowl. She brought it over to her daughter at the table in the middle of the kitchen, who was glancing out the window nervously. The girl's pink and red eyes were wide with fear, the large deer ears on either side of her head perked up to hear even the slightest noise.

“Calm down and eat.” Her mother said soothingly, going back to get herself a bowl. She perked up one of her own brown deer ears, listening for a moment but not hearing anything but the soothing sound of crickets outside. She went back to her task, bringing the stew back over and sitting across from her daughter.

“I just...” The albino girl glanced back to her mother, biting her lip anxiously. “I just have a feeling like someone's watching us.”

“Don't be silly.” Her mother laughed as she tied her wild curly brown hair behind her head. “We're in the middle of the woods, remember? No one in Wonderland is going to find us here, no one knew where we moved to when we left the village.”

The village... Misa sighed at the memory of the bustling marketplace, her childhood friends... it had been her fault she had to leave. Her and her stupid pink eyes. “I wish we hadn't had to leave.” She said in a low voice.

“I know dear, but it was for the best. Our neighbors were willing to protect you from the outsiders, but you know what kind of risk it was.” Her mother sipped the stew and set down her spoon when Misa didn't start eating. “Misa, it's not your fault. You were born this way, you have no control over that. The legends have always been told of the white deer, and they always will be. They're part of your life. You have to accept it.”

“I don't want to accept it!” Misa growled angrily. “People hunt me down to use my magic, to tell their future and try to make their lives better. They try to find me because I'm 'good luck' somehow.” She said in a mocking tone. “And what about the legend about the white doe's blood, huh? What am I supposed to do about that? How should I accept that people want to kill me?”

Her mother frowned and shook her head in dismay. “It's not a choice you can make, Misa. Your magic is special, that is true. Even if you weren't a white doe you would be sought for it. I'm not so sure about the good luck part. Farmer Joseph still couldn't find his cat and he's known you since you were a babe.” She smiled at the memory of the ornary farmer walking through town calling 'here kitty kitty'.

Misa smirked as well, taking a spoonful of stew and blowing on it before eating it. Their ears both perked as a metallic noise came from outside, followed by hushed whispers.

Misa glanced to her mother, whose eyes were now wide with fear as well. No one should know Misa was here.
Another sound outside made both of them stand from the table, Misa to get her walking stick to defend herself with while her mother grabbed an iron pan from the kitchen, holding it up like a club while they silently moved about their small home. Being a deer with such lithe limbs was beneficial for stealth- especially in the darkness.

“I don't hear anything inside, are you sure she's here?” Misa heard a gruff male voice from outside, making both women within tense at the obvious sign that there was indeed hostile men outside.

“I'm sure. That stupid deer from the village wouldn't shut up before we gutted him. Said they were going into a hut in the forest- said they'd be alone.” Another voice answered in a hushed tone. Two sets of steps walked up to the house, fanning out and walking around while Misa's mother stood in front of the only door into the building, the windows already obscured with blankets as a precaution since they had moved into the small cottage.

The steps walked back to the front, the men whispering softly to each other as her mother raised the pan higher, preparing to strike at the first person that went inside. The simple door opened wide and two burly men rushed in, only to meet the pan to one of their head's, knocking him cold to the ground. The other man grabbed her mother with a growl, stepping over his comrade as he slammed the small woman against the wall behind her, knocking the pan from her hand.

“Little bitch-” He growled as he pulled a saber from his waist and held it up to her neck.

“No!” Misa shouted from behind him, rushing up with her stick and hitting him in the head as hard as she could. The blow made the man only flinch and he turned wild golden eyes back at her, the cat-like slits narrowing in his anger. Oh no... Misa shuddered with recognition at what they were. Lions! They weren't here just to take her for good luck, they were going to get her blood, and they wouldn't care what way they got it.

“Leave my mother alone!” Misa yelled, trying to overcome the feeling of dread filling her at the man's deep feline growl.

“This bitch knocked out Sampson.” He bared long fangs as he held the saber closer to her mother's neck, the blade causing a few drops to leak out.

“He's just knocked out, he'll wake up!” Misa shouted, looking down at the other lion only to see a pool of blood starting to form around his head. She looked slowly back up at the lion, only to see him staring at his comrade with wide eyes.

He let out a loud yell of anger and slashed his blade across her mother's neck, causing the blood to spray out across the cabin, a streak hitting Misa as her mother fell to the ground. The woman stood in shock for a moment as the man looked down at the corpse at his feet, as if contemplating what he had just done.

Misa didn't waist the opportunity- she bolted out the door, running out into the forest, her long legs carrying her quickly among the trees and ferns, her feet crunching delicately against the ground. Soon the footsteps of the man following her faded behind her, but still she continued, dodging branches and leaping over logs, running as far as her legs would carry her until at last she ran out of breath, leaning against a tree as her heart pounded painfully in her chest. She looked up and perked her ears, but heard nothing around her.

She set her cheek against the rough bark and let out a small sob at the memory of her mother defending her while she had watched helplessly- frozen with fear. She fell to her knees on the forest floor, not hearing the footsteps behind her until it was too late.
