I agree. Dad hates doctors more than almost anything, though. He's also quite overweight, diabetic, and has heart trouble, so our family already does the lower-sodium-everything and sugar-free-snacks bit. Still, he loves to eat. >_< I just eat the first serving and decline to eat the last four pancakes.

Our eating habits are surprisingly healthy, actually. Low sodium, mostly sugar-free, nothing with corn, fat-free dairy products... Add to that the list of everything my mom's allergic to (all nuts, most fruits, lettuce), and we are a seriously whacked family.

I love Gloria Vanderbilt jeans, which thankfully you can get at Kohl's. Best of all, they come in several shades of denim, plus black. Just My Size is another good brand for everything, although you really have to shop online because most stores don't carry a big enough selection.

@ Sol
That's a really short list! My sister gets the same way when she drinks straight water. Have you tried seasoning vegetables with salt-free stuff like Emeril's Essence or hiding them in a chicken pot pie type dish? Even tomatoes and lettuce make you sick? You can't even have submarine sandwiches?! :aah:

I hate tomatoes.. but lettuce, I'm finicky with. Salads, I can eat but I drown them in ranch. Shredded lettuce is good on sandwiches, like what Subway does. Just not a fan of the blah taste of lettuce, any kind. I really dislike um.. what's it called.. spinach leaf salad also. Now... submarine sandwiches.. I eat them. But I have nothing on them. Mine is Bread -> Mayo -> Meat -> Bread maybe shredded lettuce or cheese, but rarely cheese.

I seem to be able to find veggies in anything. My mother used to do that 'hide it' crap with my food, and I would take a bite, spit it out and pick the veggie out. I just know the taste and I can't stand it. It doesn't matter how it's seasoned, cooked, or hidden. I will not eat vegetables.

@Hawke - I thought about the V8. I tried it. I nearly threw up. It tastes horrible! I even tried the V-Fusion with the fruit. It tasted like someone threw a banana up in a can of tomatoes! >_<

I'm tellin yall.. I'm the worst person in the world when it comes to food. It took me 10 years to be able to stomach squash prepared in a method that wasn't fried.

I was reading Soleil's comment on veggies she likes and I was thinking about some of the stuff that I eat. lol Soleil you don't even like sweet potatoes? I like those. How about the snow peas? I never thought I'd like those but they are pretty good. I tried squash once at a buffet and I actually liked it. It was a butternut squash but it was good. It was a little on the sweet side which I didn't think it would be. I was trying to think of some other stuff that I like that was a little weirder. Oh boiled green banana's are good.... but not really a veggie LOL I also like cassava and tanya's. they are kind of like a potato but have a slightly different taste. they are a root veggie the same as cassava. I have only had those boiled though.

I've had a weight problem since I was 10 years old. I suffer from depression and tend to eat a lot when I'm upset, a habit I've been working to get rid of. Once the warm weather sets in again I'm going start going swimming for 30 minutes every morning five days a week. In the meantime, though, I've been watching what I eat and I'm trying really hard to cut down on my sugar intake. Also, my doctor's recommended that I eat six small meals every day rather than three big meals but I'm finding it hard to get my head around that because usually I only eat three meals a day and don't like to snack in between. Can anyone advise me on this, please?

-pats- That's okay, Sol. Veggies aren't all there is; a lot of the time you can get the nutrients from other foods or vitamin supplements. You can probably taste the cellulose in the veg, right? That would be a pretty neat ability if it didn't cause so much trouble. :t-X3:

Mmm, sweet potato! I love all those orangey is-it-a-fruit-or-veg, like sweet potato, summer squash, pumpkin. I haven't heard of tanya before... -googles-

@ Thylacina
Well, I'm not an expert (stating the obvious, here) but I suggest that you eat essentially the same times you usually would. Just divide the meal in half. For example, have a bowl of cereal for breakfast, then have a banana and a handful of nuts or trail mix for elevensies. Some yummy salmon and broccoli for lunch, then a plate of tabouli a few hours later. It won't really feel like snacking between meals if the meals aren't huge, is my thinking.
As for depression issues, there are lots of 'happy' foods that can help with that. Yahoo!Health and HealthCastle have a couple useful articles. I have to admit, chocolate and berries are my favorites on that list. :t-lol:

First time I've seen this, and I figure I could offer a bit of advice.

I'm not overweight or anything really, but did you know that calcium, so long as you can absorb it, actually seems to impede your bodies ability to absorb fat to a degree? They did a study on it, and I'll see if I can find the article, but if I remember correctly, people who drank a glass of chocolate milk every day weighed less than people who didn't.

Just something I figured would be helpful. :italian: If you don't like milk or something, you could always eat other foods rich in calcium and vitamin D.

XD nope I can't even stand the smell of sweet potatoes! Peas, I hate the.. like.. I say texture but it's not the texture, it's the explody-ness of them! Like grapes, but grapes are good, how they explode when you bite them!

I am horrible when it comes to veggies, I'll like.. try to eat them, but I end up spitting them out because it grosses me out so much. Usually it's the taste or texture, a lot of the smells make me sick too and turn me off immediately. If something smells bad, I won't eat it. No matter how good it looks.

I do take vitamin supplements just cause of some deficiencies that were found out this summer, well I say deficiencies but I was just a little low in some areas, not really fully deficient. I dunno about the cellulose, but I taste something that makes me gag XD

wow.. so much to read so little time to write.. lol

WB Hawke!
And Much support for Sol - and everyone :t-hugs:
And Tassel - I'm post college age I am 5'2(160cm) and 233.2pounds (106kg) - you are not alone (esp if all the TV stuff is correct we are the majority thee days not a Minority...which is perhaps not so healthly.. but *Shrugs*)
GrowlingCupcake wrote: I think I need to try this idea... I always eat too much, I think. Really, I should eat frequent small meals 'cause otherwise I get hungry and cranky but I don't need 'full size' each time... But things just taste. so. fucking. good. D:
hear hear! I also have tried the "eat off a side plate not a mains plate" it does work - if you eat slowly (as the person in your PM said) because it takes about 20 mins for the "WOAH!! I"M FULL!!!" message to get from your tummy to your brain - apparently according to science.

Also - Celery is yuck. But Apples are exactly the same. They take more to digest then they give you - plus they have some good stuff in them.
And i have to admit, I really am starting to enjoy steamed veg.

perhaps your dad needs to realise that you do not wish to end up like he is? A heart attack waiting to happen...but then again its not all about what others do. i have found that although my DF gets fish n chips and maccas and KFC (YAY hot n spicy is back in OZ!! :yey: ... :t-cry: ) I can choose to say no and not eat what he is.
it bloody hard - esp when it smells so good, but I think you really have to want to change your habits for YOU - not for anyone else.

if you are doing it for someone else - you are doomed to fail. You just don't have the motivation or the will power to devote to sticking to your planned weight loss.

@ SOL - if you can't eat vegies - can you eat/stomach fruit? veg is not the be all end all for weight loss, its just "healthier" than not eating them, you are still able to eat some so its not like you can't eat any of them.

@ Thylacina - first off welcome!
Secondly - winter for many people with depression/mental illness is a very hard season to get through. I'm sure when the weather warms up and your mood changes, you will find it easier to cope.
As for your doctors recommendation of 6 meals a day rather than 3, is to attempt to spread what you are eating in 3 meals over the day, if you truely can not get around it, cutting sugar (esp soft drinks) is a good idea. increase your exercise - I hear walking 10 mins each day improves your mood, and gives you a boost of endorphins (although i think 20mins+ is a better option as they really start to flow by then).
Also (as i see your in Australia), have a look at the Black Dog institute - they have a lot of good ideas there to help manage your depression.

@ Shenzi - your body can only absorb a small amount of calcium - roughly 10% of what we actually intake. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition did say their study showed a lower amount of Fat (triacylglycerol specifically) in the blood was found after calcium intake, it is still a very controversial subject whether or not it affects weight loss in the long term. (we can hope though!)
This said - it defiantly doesn't hurt to have a glass of milk daily or eat yogurt. I also wouldn't advise it being Choc milk (or flavored milk at all)- it has a higher sugar content then normal regular milk.

wow... lots of writing...hmmm, anyway
I - unfortunately, but perhaps not unknowingly - put on 1.3kg this week, so hopefully this Thursday will see that gain turn to a loss...if I eat well anyway lol no more pies for my lunch thats for sure!

Some tips ive found:
1. plan your meals for 4-7 days ahead (Where possible)
I know some of you still live at home with parents, so perhaps dinner is not always something you can decide on yourself - but I think we are all old enough to plan our own lunches and breakfasts. its a small start, but something worth it.

2. Hawke said - Write it down!
Many of us have a blog, a diary or even a journal - so perhaps make a secret one, that only you know of for your food. You don't have to show it to anyone, tell anyone - its yours, where you should be as honest to yourself as you can be. Because, lets face it - in the end its only you you are deceiving.

3. Healthy weight loss per week?
anywhere from 500grams to 1000g (1kg or 3 pounds)
There has been recent studies telling us that the more you lose the healthier you will be the faster you reach your goal weight. Which sure - you lose several pounds, you feel fantastic! and you are motivated... but a consistent weight loss if easier to maintain, and in the end you will feel more motivated than by having a 4pounds loss this week, 2 pound gain the next followed by a 1 pound loss...etc a consistant .5-1 puts you in a better frame of mind about your weight.

4. Do it for YOU.
You have to be honest about this. If we can come up with excuses of - ohh, my family won't so I can't. or, I have to do it because such n such won't find me attractive if I don't - are not motivational. You have to want it.

5. DIET = Swear word.
Diets don't work. once you stop, bad habits come back, and your weight goes back up. you need to change your lifestyle - what you buy, what you eat and what you cook. how you think of food. We may eat out of boredom/stress/emotionally but we can change what it is we're eating or even not eat at those times - take out your stress on a boxing bag - imagine its who your angry/frustrated with and how much better you feel after you punched crap out of "them"

anyway.. enough from me.

Much love,
Mordeth

The glass of chocolate milk thing could have a lot of other factors working in. Like where I said "protein after exercising", a LOT of women at Curves would drink a container of C. milk after their exercise. It was a sweet reward, and the protein (and probably the calcium and other good stuff) were helping. People limiting their C.milk in take to 1 glass were probably also being careful with their other foods.

As to vitamin supplements, there's been more studies and research lately showing that they might not be all that beneficial. I think it was in a fairly recent Readers Digest that they had an article on this. Mom (an RN, who took several dietary classes before graduating (at 50 years old!)) said it was pretty spot on with other articles and reports and studies she'd recently read. Getting your vitamins and nutrients from food is best, but if you're not getting it there, then a pill probably isn't going to hurt. I've heard that the vitamin liquids, or even just breaking a vitamin pill in half can drastically increase the absorption you get from them.

For me... a public record of eating works better, because then I feel more accountable. Like "I have to write this down and other people are going to SEE it!"
Since I didn't post yesterday, I'll just do today, and I'll spoiler it, so y'all don't have to see if you don't wanna... but I know *I'M* a compulsive spoiler clicker... Lol.
Spoiler
I had my last two toaster strudles for breakfast. I'm out of milk, so I'm not sure what I'm going to eat for brekkers for the rest of the week! I had two granola bars (at different times) at work. I ate the last 3rd of Hamburger Helper for lunch, and 5 cookies. I drank lots of water today. >< But I also ate a pouch of corn nuts, and a 20oz cherry Coke (although there's still a few swallows left in the bottle., and it's in the fridge at the moment) I was having trouble staying awake at work today. Lol. Then, for dinner- over the course of a couple of hours, I ate 5 hotdogs. 2 in buns with ketchup and sweet relish, and 3 plain. Although, one of the three was shared with Sam (my pet raven).
Actually... overall, that's not too bad today!
Hawke's IRL fiance, Lunaroki, suffered a massive stroke and died on Tuesday, March 31st, 2015.

Hawke needs to concentrate on other things, and is leaving MS permanently.

Thank you all for many fun years.

Congrats to your Mum hawke! That must of been a bit of a boost to her self esteem - would of been to mine! :D although graduating at 28 will be a big boost to my SE it's not going to be funny...

ive got my weight in this morning, then a dash to classes and hopefully I can stay away from the irresistible smells of the food court and subway and all the friend goods.. ooh and the noodles - love the asian noodles they make...*slaps self on wrist* bad girl! keep away from the food court!

anyway...not much to say - tried to eat healthier this week, but had a few slip ups..hopefully a loss is all I worry about, either that or stay the same - anything apart from a gain is good...

ugh...who am i kidding? I dont really give a shit about any of it atm...but thats another story entirely...maybe i need a "Do you live with a loved one who has a mental illness?" support group too.... :t-cry:
it's so stupid, you'd think id be used to feeling like shit about things - but this is taking a toll on me. almost 3 weeks straight, I dont like feeling like it. but i can not seem to pull myself out of it.
Anyone got any tips on that? ive tried walking, distracting myself - yay for MS there - watching tv, throwing myself into my uni work..(really should get that assignment finished today before i have class so I can hand it in...), writing a spontaneous story for Shaineko's contest...nothing seems to work.
ugh.. going to go mine, need to stop this downward spiral.

Love ya's all
