I think I need to try this idea... I always eat too much, I think. Really, I should eat frequent small meals 'cause otherwise I get hungry and cranky but I don't need 'full size' each time... But things just taste. so. fucking. good.
hear hear! I also have tried the "eat off a side plate not a mains plate" it does work - if you eat slowly (as the person in your PM said) because it takes about 20 mins for the "WOAH!! I"M FULL!!!" message to get from your tummy to your brain - apparently according to science.
Also - Celery is yuck. But Apples are exactly the same. They take more to digest then they give you - plus they have some good stuff in them.
And i have to admit, I really am starting to enjoy steamed veg.

Dad hates doctors more than almost anything, though. He's also quite overweight, diabetic, and has heart trouble, so our family already does the lower-sodium-everything and sugar-free-snacks bit. Still, he loves to eat. >_< I just eat the first serving and decline to eat the last four pancakes.
perhaps your dad needs to realise that you do not wish to end up like he is? A heart attack waiting to happen...but then again its not all about what others do. i have found that although my DF gets fish n chips and maccas and KFC (YAY hot n spicy is back in OZ!!
...
) I can choose to say no and not eat what he is.
it bloody hard - esp when it smells so good, but I think you really have to want to change your habits for YOU - not for anyone else.
if you are doing it for someone else - you are doomed to fail. You just don't have the motivation or the will power to devote to sticking to your planned weight loss.
@ SOL - if you can't eat vegies - can you eat/stomach fruit? veg is not the be all end all for weight loss, its just "healthier" than not eating them, you are still able to eat some so its not like you can't eat any of them.
@ Thylacina - first off welcome!
Secondly - winter for many people with depression/mental illness is a very hard season to get through. I'm sure when the weather warms up and your mood changes, you will find it easier to cope.
As for your doctors recommendation of 6 meals a day rather than 3, is to attempt to spread what you are eating in 3 meals over the day, if you truely can not get around it, cutting sugar (esp soft drinks) is a good idea. increase your exercise - I hear walking 10 mins each day improves your mood, and gives you a boost of endorphins (although i think 20mins+ is a better option as they really start to flow by then).
Also (as i see your in Australia), have a look at the Black Dog institute - they have a lot of good ideas there to help manage your depression.
@ Shenzi - your body can only absorb a small amount of calcium - roughly 10% of what we actually intake. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition did say their study showed a lower amount of Fat (triacylglycerol specifically) in the blood was found after calcium intake, it is still a very controversial subject whether or not it affects weight loss in the long term. (we can hope though!)
This said - it defiantly doesn't hurt to have a glass of milk daily or eat yogurt. I also wouldn't advise it being Choc milk (or flavored milk at all)- it has a higher sugar content then normal regular milk.
wow... lots of writing...hmmm, anyway
I - unfortunately, but perhaps not unknowingly - put on 1.3kg this week, so hopefully this Thursday will see that gain turn to a loss...if I eat well anyway lol no more pies for my lunch thats for sure!
Some tips ive found:
1. plan your meals for 4-7 days ahead (Where possible)
I know some of you still live at home with parents, so perhaps dinner is not always something you can decide on yourself - but I think we are all old enough to plan our own lunches and breakfasts. its a small start, but something worth it.
2. Hawke said - Write it down!
Many of us have a blog, a diary or even a journal - so perhaps make a secret one, that only you know of for your food. You don't have to show it to anyone, tell anyone - its yours, where you should be as honest to yourself as you can be. Because, lets face it - in the end its only you you are deceiving.
3. Healthy weight loss per week?
anywhere from 500grams to 1000g (1kg or 3 pounds)
There has been recent studies telling us that the more you lose the healthier you will be the faster you reach your goal weight. Which sure - you lose several pounds, you feel fantastic! and you are motivated... but a consistent weight loss if easier to maintain, and in the end you will feel more motivated than by having a 4pounds loss this week, 2 pound gain the next followed by a 1 pound loss...etc a consistant .5-1 puts you in a better frame of mind about your weight.
4. Do it for YOU.
You have to be honest about this. If we can come up with excuses of - ohh, my family won't so I can't. or, I have to do it because such n such won't find me attractive if I don't - are not motivational. You have to want it.
5. DIET = Swear word.
Diets don't work. once you stop, bad habits come back, and your weight goes back up. you need to change your lifestyle - what you buy, what you eat and what you cook. how you think of food. We may eat out of boredom/stress/emotionally but we can change what it is we're eating or even not eat at those times - take out your stress on a boxing bag - imagine its who your angry/frustrated with and how much better you feel after you punched crap out of "them"
anyway.. enough from me.
Much love,
Mordeth
I don't want to diet. I want to change.
