Ortus Lunestre Dragon #1063

General

Though the runes of the Ashen Temple remain largely untranslated, the murals in many of the chambers sport these dazzling creatures, their images illuminated with magical paint that has not faded for thousands of years. Ortus lunestre dragons are found throughout Calidis, but their population is concentrated near the Temple. Although the Temple is far too old for any of the lunestre dragons around today to remember its former inhabitants, they do seem to know something about the Temple's history and will often linger around the excavators, watching their work with fascination. They offer no hints to the researchers, but coo in approval at any new discovery. Their support is often appreciated after a hard day's work, and many of the excavators have been known to invite an ortus lunestre dragon or two to come home with them when it is time to leave the island.

Egg

This egg is a bright red, with a small teal design on its shell.

Hatchling

Young ortus lunestre dragons are much like their cousins in that they rarely socialize and spend most of their juvenile lives eating. They are exceedingly picky, only dinning on the rare Calidis euphorbia. As they are among the only creatures able to digest the plant's toxic leaves, they are a valuable part of the Calidis ecosystem. The lunestre dragons' population must remain in balance with the plant's in order to ensure that the plants remain plentiful without overtaking the island.

Adult

The ancient inhabitants of Calidis cherished the ortus lunestre dragon as faithful companions, if their frequent use of the creatures in their art is anything to judge by. There are many images of the dragons accompanying travellers as guides or companions, and more of them being offered as gifts. The dragons seem to have been regarded as symbols of good fortune, traded among many caretakers over their lifetimes. Whenever a person was in dire straits, a neighbor would offer them their dragon as a companion. When the original person was in good standing and encountered someone else in need, they would pass their dragon on to help. Unlike many creatures, the dragons seem readily capable of bonding to new caretakers; they never forget their old human companions, but they take quickly to new ones. Some of those who have brought the dragons over from Calidis have renewed the traditions preserved on the Ashen Temple murals, offering the dragons as gifts to promote health and wellbeing.
