General
Crions were found deep within forests, where strange markings covered the trees. Markings made by ancient tribes are not uncommon in forests, but these particular ones appeared to have magical roots. Further explorations led to the discovery of crions and their curious magic. The crions can transcribe any sounds they hear, the markings on the trees being their written interpretations of various forest sounds. While they come in many colors and sizes, people domesticated only the smallest and most docile of them. Those who choose to keep crions as companions should always have some dried meat on them as these creatures have an almost insatiable appetite. If the crions do not receive treats often, they will nibble on fingers or other body parts, leaving people with nasty bite marks. Despite all this, the crions' magic is quite helpful. From brilliant ideas to urgent notes or shopping lists, the crions magically write down everything they hear - although not always in an accurate manner. People know to give the crions some parchment for keeping; otherwise, they make the words appear on the nearest flat surface. And as funny as it might sound, no one wants to spend weeks scrubbing off badly written words from the floor or cupboard doors.
Egg
This small egg shakes lightly whenever someone close-by speaks.
Hatchling
The crion hatchling hardly gives any indication of what it will look like once it reaches adulthood. It is currently round and fluffy, with a tiny black face poking out from all that fuzz. The desire to pet it overcomes you every time you lay eyes on it, but you soon learn to keep a considerable distance since its bites are usually nasty. Training these little creatures should be done with thick leather gloves and plenty of parchment. The gloves protect your hands from continuous biting, and the parchment comes in handy once the crion hatchlings realize they can convert sounds into writing through their magic. This happens soon after they hatch, and random objects will constantly have strange markings appear on them until the hatchlings are moved into a quiet space. Training the pale crions is fairly easy, but they do not pay as much attention to details as the vibrant ones. While the vibrant crion hatchlings take longer to train, they will learn to write things somewhat accurately, compared to the pale ones, that mix letters and misspell words.
Adult
Many people claim to have perfectly trained crions as companions, but so far, no one has ever been able to prove this. No matter how much training is involved or how dedicated a magi is, the crions will always make some spelling mistakes when using their magic to transcribe the sounds they hear. Students usually put a lot of effort into training the crions, hoping that one day these creatures will write entire essays from dictation without a single mistake. This is a dream yet to come true, so crions are used for note-taking rather than writing academic papers. Although they love hunting for small prey, crions will never turn down meat treats and expect to receive them often. If they feel like they are mistreated or forgotten by their magi, the crion adults will band together and decorate the Keep walls with misspelled words, hoping to gain the desired attention from magi. The crions don't have long-term memory and use their magic for things they hear on the spot. They are not reliable in delivering messages as they easily get distracted by small prey and forget what destination they are supposed to reach. Fortunately, the crions get attached to magi easily and rarely leave their side for too long, so the risk of them destroying random property with strange markings is minimal.
