General
Mnemosynes are beautiful but mysterious creatures, balanced equally between the light and the dark. In order to keep this balance, magi should always have an equal pair of mnemosynes; although they are neither good nor evil - despite their appearance - they are unable to create memories without a partner. When together, mnemosynes can use the orbs they create to allow magi to access memories, either happy or sad depending on which mnemosyne creates the orb: females allow access to sad memories, while males allow access to happy memories. Large but placid creatures, mnemosynes resemble dragons but don't seem to feel a kinship to the other species, preferring the companionship of their chosen lifetime partner and their magi. Mnemosynes are attentive, kind parents, and will always produce and raise two hatchlings at a time, one of each gender.
Egg
This egg has two wings that show the duality of the creature inside.
Hatchling
Hatchling mnemosynes are unable to produce memory orbs until after their first year of life, when they're approximately halfway grown. Some magi theorize that this is because a creature without memories of its own cannot see the memories of others. After their first year, they begin to produce orbs but can only show small memories until they're fully grown. Hatchlings are more affectionate than their parents and like nothing more than to cuddle up with their magi on a bed or couch - at least until they get too big. As with the adults, hatchling mnemosynes should have a partner by the time they're ready to produce memory orbs, but before then, hatchlings enjoy playing with many others of their kind, sometimes roaming the halls of the keep in packs to poke their noses into anything that seems interesting.
Adult
As adults, mnemosynes are invaluable in helping magi relive memories, regain lost memories, or see the memories of others, although this is rare and usually only happens between magi who trust each other completely. Although adults may look either good or evil, both genders are neutral despite the female's easier time showing sad memories and the male showing happier memories. In the wild they are mostly active around the new year and many magi see them as both a sign of loss and of rebirth. Mnemosynes aren't as affectionate as adults - possibly due to their size - but they enjoy spending quiet time with their magi, even if it's just sleeping nearby while their magi works or reads. They raise their hatchlings with care and are always willing to help any magi who needs help with accessing a memory, no matter how small.
