Hydrosauri are not powerful companions, but they can prove useful from time to time. They are notably intelligent for lizards and can be trained fairly easily if given the right motivation. Many hydrosauri are taken along as ambassadors to towns and villages where magic is mistrusted, for they are gentle creatures and like to display harmless magics that can enthrall curious villagers. Although solitary most of the time, hydrosauri do occasionally interact with one another, usually through a series of gestures and body language. These lizards are almost completely silent, and will only hiss when threatened. At the Keep, hydrosauri are kept in heated chambers with indoor ponds to swim in, and will form complex social hierarchies when in a group. The most dominant lizards, usually the male with the largest crest, can be found resting in the prime basking spot – even if that happens to be on top of another lizard!

Distant relatives of the anaugi, hydrosauri are fairly large lizards that possess limited control over water. They love to swim and can often be found paddling their way through shallow streams in the rainforests where they live. Their magic allows them to run across river surfaces and lift tendrils of water that they can use to lash out predators. Their powers only encompass a small area around the lizard, and it can be difficult to prod these languid creatures into action unless they are under threat, but most magi appreciate them as companion creatures. It is not uncommon to see a student walking around the Keep with a young hydrosaurus perched on his or her shoulder like a parrot. The claws, sloughs, spines, and bones of hydrosauri can all be used in potions having to do with water magic.
