Female Hatchling

Aquifereptis hatch by eating their own eggshell, followed by any loose rocks in the vicinity. Their growth is entirely dependent on how much they eat, and they have neither the bright crystals nor flowing waters of adults. Before long the hatchling will fly off - an impressive feat for a creature of living stone - searching for some isolated place to make their home, such as a high mountain or thick jungle.
In the remote heights of the Me'chuan Mountains, there is a stream so pure and clear that its waters are said to revitalize any plant or creature who drinks from it, even from the edge of death. Intrepid explorers would sometimes try to find its source, but were stymied by a magnificent waterfall - too tall to climb, and no flying creature was willing to carry a rider to the top. Finally, a young magi managed to levitate to the great height, and found at the top a deep lake. At the far side was a rocky outcrop, and on this rise was a statue of a stone dragon, its back lined with crystals and water pouring from its wings. Sure no one would believe the discovery, the youth decided to take one of the crystals as proof. But at the first touch, the "statue" turned its head to eye the interloper. For a long time the dragon just stared, and the youth could not move. Then, slowly, the great beast raised one claw, offering the youth a heavy stony egg.
