Heligre are large when they hatch and only continue to grow until they reach their full adult size in four to five years. This slow growth seems to help keep them from being as clumsy as the hatchlings of similar species, and they'll often begin dancing at young ages, first mimicking their parents then beginning to create their own routines. Heligre hatchlings are active and brave - sometimes to the point of being foolhardy. Fortunately their adults keep a close eye on them and are always ready to step in if a hatchling needs protection. Though they don’t grow their antlers until they reach adulthood, heligre hatchlings are quickly capable of using the fire around their legs in both display and aggression.

Though heligre are enormous beasts, easily capable of carrying a person, they're remarkably delicate and graceful in their movements. Heligre are also known as firedancers due to the living flames that wreathe their feet, and their propensity for ritualized dancing. These dances are performed for many reasons: mating rituals, to show respect to older or more powerful heligre, after the death of a loved one, or even just for the joy of dancing. However, as beautiful as they are - and as affectionate as they can be - magi should always remember that heligre are large predators, protective of family and territory.
