Hatchling ethereal lantern goats are barely bigger than their egg once they hatch; small enough to curl up in the palm of an adult man's hand. They grow quickly but even at their adult size are small enough to be comfortably carried with one arm. Hatchlings take a week or two to get the hang of their wings, but once they do, they are often found zipping about the keep. Their flames dim during the daylight hours and combined with their tiny size, this can make them almost impossible to see. Fortunately they're smart enough to stay out of the way of heavily travelled routes, though magi within the keep are advised to doublecheck that chair they're about to sit on.
Ethereal lantern goats were once thought to be fairies, come to light a lost traveller safely home. In the dark, when these tiny goats are most active, it was difficult to see what they truly look like. The gentle chime of their golden bracelets is often the first hint a traveller has of the approach of an ethereal lantern goat, and this sound is usually calming. In some places, travellers have established a tradition of leaving small treats at crossroads as thanks to the local ethereal lantern goats, and to ensure that there will always be a light to guide them home.
