Malicorns are difficult creatures to care for, but not because of the difficulty in finding or acquiring them. Magi who have worked with the creatures jokingly proclaim them to be not horses or unicorns, but in fact particularly ornery cats. Adults will often merely watch as an unwitting magi takes one of their eggs to raise as a companion. This is not from apathy on the malicorns' part, but practicality; most eggs get returned as well-fed adolescents once the magi realizes they're getting nowhere training them. Malicorns of any age have little to fear from predators thanks to their magic-infused horns, so juveniles not taken by over-confident students are free to roam as they please. They grow bored easily, and so tend to return to the herd to play with their fellows in raucous sparring games. As their magic works on other malicorns, and they seem to have no remedy for the ailments they cause, these games can be lethal, and are in fact the leading cause of death for malicorns.

The grasslands of coastal Foenara have stories about magical horned horses, like many places in the world, but theirs skew different than typical tales of unicorns. The Foenarans describe an obstinate creature, a golden equid with curling horns, that is loud, boisterous, and has no fear of humans. The creature will approach a farm as it pleases and eat the farmers' crops right in front of them, the farmers unable to do anything for fear of the creature's horns. Any water the horns touch becomes poisonous to drink, and even a gentle tap on a healthy person or animal will cause them to fall ill to a seemingly random calamity. It is common to find small offering shrines on the outskirts of villages, regularly stocked with the creatures' favorite treats in an effort to appease them. These shrines seem quite effective, as the horned horses themselves can often be seen munching on their free meals or waiting patiently for the troughs to be refilled.
