Element: Life
Wumpyrrs look fearsome and the legend surrounding them may scare young children, but their behavior is anything but. Timid and submissive creatures by nature, they will never go so far as to even look a person in the eye. The only time they will brave contact is when someone is injured or not feeling well. Then the wumpyrr will begin their song, which sounds like a hum or sometimes a purr. Their magic, a strong variant of life magic, will quickly begin easing pain and speed healing. The runes on their bodies glow when they use their magic, but while the markings look meaningful, learned magis know that they are mere gibberish, simply random assortments and patterns that look like runes but aren't. Rather than fearsome magical beasts, wumpyrrs are valued companions, though one must be patient considering their shy natures. The most interesting thing about them, though, is not the strange legends or their healing ability. It is the fact that they do not die from old age or ever get ill. The magic in their bodies keeps them static and un-aging as soon as it stabilizes in adulthood.
There are many tales told of fearsome beasts that stalk the dark forests and still waters near coastal villages. With terrifying, bony visages, long claws and wings, and glowing runes along their bodies, they are said to bring fear and destruction wherever they go. They will stalk those who are injured and sick, siphoning their strength with an eerie moaning until the person perishes. If anyone gets close enough to read the runes, they will be cursed for the rest of their lives. Such tales have been passed down for ages, until a magi finally decided to seek the truth of these creatures. She could never get close, spending ages seeking out what she had almost decided was a myth, until one day she fell down a ravine in the deep forest. With an injured ankle, she worried about being able to make it back to the Keep--until one of the creatures poked its bony head from the brush. With a quick burst of magic and an eerie hum, the magi's ankle was healed, and the creature fled. No marks of its passing remained, except for an egg for the magi to care for.
