Magellic hatchlings are dull compared to their adult counterparts. They are soft, small, and cute, but it takes them half a year to gain the distinct color and patterns that make the adult penguins so beautiful. Until then, they are plump and clumsy, waddling awkwardly about to get anywhere. Their favorite places are wherever it's soft and warm, whether that's their magi's lap or on top of any fluffy creature nearby. It might be alarming to a magi to see their toddling penguin chick nuzzle up against direwolves and gryphons, who might view the small creature as an easy snack, but fortunately, the chick's cute little whistling chirps seem to be just as irresistible to those fierce creatures as to its magi companion. Anyone raising a magellic hatchling must take care not to overfeed their hatchling - or allow their other creatures to overfeed the hatchling, as the case may be - as those same chirps seem particularly plaintive and hard to resist when being used to beg for food. Fortunately, they can be easily distracted by music. A magi has only to hum or sing or play a tune, and their magellic chick will stop whatever it was doing to eagerly chirp along.
Magellics are renowned for their singing, and are highly sought-after companions for their delightful voices and their friendly natures. Dawn magellics have bright, fiery plumage and tend to sing the most early in the morning and sleep with the sun, while dusk magellics have deep purples and blues, and prefer performing in the evening and sleeping during the day. Magi venturing into the Arkene, where wild magellics live, can hear the chorus of whole flocks of penguins singing when the sun rises or sets. Most magi believe this behavior is for the same reason most birds sing in the mornings: to communicate with their neighbors and flock mates, checking in with each other before another day begins. Some people make trips to the Arkene just to watch and hear the wild magellics sing together, though those who choose to set up camp within earshot of those flocks will soon realize they have made a mistake - no reasonable amount of rest can possibly be gained when at least one extremely loud penguin will be singing nearby at any given time.
