Carmelus hatchlings can walk as soon as they are born, and from there they spend most of their time learning to dance. The sound they make with their four two-toed feet sounds like raindrops as they learn the graceful steps of their own inner beat, but over time begins to carry a melody of its own. They are curious young creatures, eager to explore the world and meet new people and animals. As they travel, the feathers on their bodies begin to grow into the long, characteristic ribbons, as though it grows along with their happiness about learning new things.
With footsteps that sound like festive drums, carmelus can be found in many regions of the world, from the sands of the Etain desert to the snows at the peaks of the Alasre glacier. With their bright coloration and tassels made of colorful bits of skin and feathers, they are easy to spot as they travel in herds of happy, frolicking individuals. While they can be tamed for use in work, it is not considered the best idea. Light-hearted by nature, they are apt to break into a gracefully, swaying dance while being ridden, or take the most scenic, roundabout routes rather than the direct path if given messages to deliver. Domestic carmeli are more commonly used in traveling circuses or other forms of entertainment, where their innate sense of joy can easily spread to others. Since they can travel anywhere, they're known for bringing happiness to people living in remote regions
