The simple sight of this squirming larvae makes most uncomfortable, but it's their size that intimidates novices, easily reaching the length of a magi's arm. In truth, your fortis larva is incredibly docile and likes nothing more than to munch upon fruits, seeds and various forage. Occasionally your jeweled grub will prove its worth by attempting to defend you by raising its pincers to battle creatures they perceive as aggressive... like exceptionally playful winged cats. However, because of their slow metabolism they are often rendered helpless; fortis larvae require extra protection from predators and thus spend much of their time burrowed deep into the soil.
Fortis beetles are warriors incarnate. Close to two feet in length, these beetles continue to grow for most of their adult life and are able to defend themselves from the hungriest of gryphons. Their beautifully decorated bodies serve more than just to look pretty - their exoskeleton is stronger than forged steel and can resist even the most intense dragon flame. Fortis beetles form a strong bond with their magi, seemingly bound by an invisible code of honor. Serf fortis beetles are able to fiercely defend their magi with their powerful pincers and mandibles, while imperial fortis beetles intimidate with their armored horns and can take to sky battles if need be. These beetles are unique in their prowess, in that the way they battle is seemingly an art form. They use their strong pincers or horns in calculated movements, anticipating their rivals moves as a swordsman would. It should be known that the respect of a fortis beetle must be earned - they uphold loyalty, frugality and honor amongst all else. For this reason, they are often sentinels to those of great power - the sheer presence of these large insects demand most to behave respectfully.
