The ixotls are mainly nocturnal creatures, their glowing tail being the only thing that gives away their presence. They flutter from tree to tree, sometimes giving the impression of large moths. They can get attracted by each other's lights, gathering in clusters in the tallest trees. Adults are usually calm, rarely letting their emotions take over and influence their magic. They care deeply for their young, always keeping a close eye on the playful hatchlings. Although they are careful not to let their emotions show, the ixotl adults can put up beautiful shows in the dead of the night. When they are overjoyed - usually when a new pair bonds - the other ixotls attending the 'ceremony' will make flowers bloom, attracting all sorts of glow bugs. They will join the flight of these bugs in a colorful dance. The ixotls are careful to guard themselves when these shows happen, very few lucky magi having witnessed them over the years.
Seldom seen outside of the most remote locations in the Xoctol-Hon jungle, the mysterious ixotl are powerful creatures possessing magic thought long forgotten. They vary in size, some as small as a house cat, others larger than that. Their power is not directly proportional to their size, as all ixotl creatures possess the same amount of magic. Ixolts hardly care about the human company, few of them seeking to befriend travelers. They feel no need to hide from the eyes of other creatures knowing not a soul would dare approach them with malice. When the tail of an ixotl glows brightly, it is a sign that they are about to use their magic. This magic happens in many forms, influenced by what the ixotls feel. When angry, the ixotls will wither the plants around them or make nearby creatures feel ill. If happy, flowers will bloom, and the skies will become clear. When sad, cold rains will cover the jungle. Those who study the ixotls from afar must be armed with patience, as these creatures rarely show their powers.
