Platergés grow to about half the height of an average magi in length when they reach maturity, slightly larger than the platypi of Lake Lakira. Those at the Keep spend most of their time swimming in Lake Lakira and sometimes deign to help the Lakiran platypi raise their eggs and hatchlings, though they will think nothing of abandoning their caretaker duties to waddle to their magi's side at a moment's notice if called. The artificer's guild maintains a large pond near their headquarters, and, in some of their larger rooms, giant tanks of water, so that platergé companions can continue to swim and play while helping their magi work. Rumor has it that some scholars in Triathe strive to find a way to extract the platergés' venom so that its effects can be used without the presence of the magical creatures. Such research has been attempted at the Keep, but since abandoned when it became clear that platergés only produce the venom under distress. Even the small doses provided willingly by companions seem to be from excess old venom secretions, stored in the spurs after a fright.
Platergés are closely related to the friendly platypuses of Lake Lakira, and considered similarly lucky, though they are less gregarious and do not lay their eggs directly into the Stream. While those that have a magi companion often visit and mingle in Lake Lakira, they seem to originate from Triathe, where wild platergé are a common sight in the great lake, and often taken as pets by the famed architects and inventors there. This is because in addition to granting good luck to those they like, their presence seems to grant sharper focus and insights to anyone around. In addition, if it can be persuaded to do so, a gentle scratch from the spurs on male platergé usually leads to fits of manic inspiration and such focus that the result is almost always exquisite craftsmanship. However, platergé also use these spurs as a defense, and the same venom applied by an irate platergé with much more force tends to cause debilitating seizures, on top of the potentially grievous mundane injuries caused by the slashing spurs.
