Cordyceps Guardians are by their nature fierce, aloof creatures. While they enjoy their magi’s company, at heart they are stoic protectors, and will quickly deal with anything they perceive as a threat to their charges. With their enormous size and keen intelligence, they are incredibly effective at their jobs. While they can be trained to protect objects or people, it is a tall undertaking, as they are instinctively driven to guard plantlife. More specifically, they will guard vegetable matter that they perceive as a good spot for mushrooms to grow. Mushrooms grow on their fur and throughout their bodies, and many perceive them as part mushroom themselves. The most efficient way to make use of their instincts and keep them happy is to plant a species of the mushroom that grows on their fur in or near something the magi wants protected. The guardian will then dedicate themselves to keeping the mushroom safe, permitting only their magi to touch it.
Deep in the heart of Silva Forest, there is a fungal organism that stretches for miles and miles. It is the largest living thing that any magi has discovered. And this enormous mushroom has only achieved its stunning size due to the fierce, noble protectors that roam that part of the forest, the Cordyceps Guardian. Three times as tall as a man, these fierce beasts were thought to be a myth, with fur run through with fungal spores and tubules. It is only when the autumn season rolls around and the guardians emerge from the depth of the forest to spread the fungal spores that it can be seen. And when they do emerge, they not only spread spores, but distribute their eggs, which will hatch into more guardians. Magi think that both beast and mushroom are spreading themselves, the mushroom to spread more copies of itself and the guardians to make sure that the new mushrooms will be protected by their progeny.
