Adult fox chinchillas have completely mastered their rather powerful magical digestion, and any Magi who wishes to have one of these creatures as a close companion will find that all the training necessary must begin upon adulthood rather than as they grow. While still hatchlings, chinchillas happily confine themselves to fruit, vegetables, small insects, and the occasional wooden chair leg, but upon adulthood a Magi must pay close attention lest small burrows begin appearing in stone, metal, expensive glass lab equipment, and anything else a drowsing chinchilla might dreamily chew through. Not many magi find them worth the trouble, but those who champion chinchillas point to the sheer tactile pleasure of petting them, the convenience of never needing to worry about rubbish disposal, and the research possibilities presented by teeth that chew through stone and a stomach that turns it into energy.

Fox chinchillas were once thought to be one of the few species of mountain rodents that are diurnal, but closer study has revealed that they are in fact nocturnal. However, they actually appear to eat in their sleep, which for years had fooled observers. Able to consume virtually any substance, they settle down for the day by beginning to gnaw away at whatever is in front of them, slowly eating a chinchilla-sized hole in the mountain or enlarging a previous nest. Their teeth never stop growing, and while these teeth are not sharp, they are incredibly durable. Periodically fox chinchillas deliberately consume stone to wear their teeth down, and travelers can always spot chinchilla habitats by the pockmarked rock surfaces, which look oddly like sea urchin beds somehow transported high up in the mountains.
