These chubby little hatchlings love to spend their time in warm waters, and will climb into their magi's bath with them if allowed. As they grow, they shed their skins like snakes until they reach their full size. Hatchlings are clumsy and will often need help shedding their skin for at least the first few times, and magi should always be careful to keep an eye on them when they begin to shed. Regal sailfin wyrm hatchlings are more delicate than their koi cousins, and possess an ability to work water magic that the koi lack. Many water magi take them as companions for this reason, as regal sailfins can help boost a water magi's spells. In exchange for this ability with magic, regal sailfins are neither venomous nor poisonous, and many predators find the hatchlings a delicacy so they need to be protected by their magi.
Sailfin wyrms are most often found in tropical areas, where they can swim and play in warm waters. They tend to avoid the deep ocean but can be spotted in rivers and lakes, as well as hot springs and any unattended baths. Regal sailfin wyrms are the smaller of the two types of sailfin wyrms, and possess a more delicate constitution, but their ability to cast and boost water magic makes them invaluable to certain magi. Despite their impressive horns, they don't often battle physically. Some magi think that the yellow designs on their skin allow them to recharge using the sunlight, and the blue on their backs and tails makes them difficult to see beneath sunlit water. Although not the largest of wyrms, they still grow to a decent size and provide pleasant companionship to any magi who takes the time to raise them.
