After several molts the chocolate earwig finally reaches adulthood. During the final molt its body hardens and gets a distinct brown color, with the shade affected by the type of chocolate the hatchling ate most. While notably larger than a hatchling, the adult chocolate earwig only measures the width of a finger. Adult chocolate earwigs are known for their love for chocolate and will find a way to get into even the most protected stashes and nest within. This has accidentally, but inevitably, led to the discovery that the chocolate earwigs taste like cherries dipped in the richest chocolate. While most people prefer their chocolate without these little companions there are those more adventurous people who deliberately seek them out for their taste.
Chocolate earwigs are among the smallest of companions, but what they lack in size they make up in numbers. Catching a glimpse of these nocturnal creatures may be hard, however, as they tend to scatter and hide from the slightest movement or flicker of light. They like to nest within cupboards and as a result may end up infesting food or spell ingredients. As they are found virtually everywhere the chocolate earwigs were early on experimented on to see if they possessed any magical abilities. While the creatures themselves didn't seem to have any notable magic another use was found, which still lingers today. The chocolate earwigs are commonly used for spell ingredients. They enhance the potency of potions, especially those of affection and desire, and even when ingested as is, especially roasted, enhance certain emotions. While the creatures are commonly found nearly anywhere, roasted chocolate earwigs are still regarded as a savory privilege of the wealthier class.
