Varja crystalwing adults can be eerie to those who are not accustomed to their company. The varja crystalwings will very obviously pay attention to everything happening around them yet react only with a piercing stare. Varja crystalwings never stop growing and the oldest of them can be gigantic. As a varja crystalwing ages, however, it gets slower and more sluggish until one day it crawls back to its nest and falls into a deep sleep. Whether the varja crystalwing ever wakes up from the sleep or not is not known but it is believed that deep in the Caves of Nareau, in the darkest parts where no other crystalwings nest, is a collective of huge sleeping varja crystawlings who in time become part of the Caves themselves.

The elusive crystalwings are rarely sighted and due to that are believed to only be a myth in some areas. Local legends describe one of these mythical creatures as large silent spirits of the lost that can block out the sun in one flap of a wing rising higher and higher until no light reaches the ground. These tales have been connected to the varja crystalwings - one of the largest crystalwing species and also one of the most solitary. The dark red crystals on them seem to absorb light from all around, making even the darkest nights seem darker yet. The absorbed light appears to make red crystalline spikes grow from the spine of the creature and the older the creature gets and the more light it absorbs, the longer the spikes grow. The spikes are believed to store immense powers that the varja crystalwing can call upon when needed. Especially those who have an affinity to more experimental and dark magics have found that getting the help of a varja crystalwing makes their spells and potions more potent.
