Male and female adult Foenaran runners are both incredibly fast, but as the males grow larger, they lose some of their speed in exchange for the ability to set their own feathers on fire. This doesn't hurt them but it can be used as both a weapon and as a mating display. Magi have been known to gather from all around the world to watch these fiery displays during the spring mating season. Female runners, when not nesting, are often used to carry messages, as they can easily cover great distances in very little time. Magi who spend their time on the grasslands have become used to spotting and avoiding female runners, who are often little more than a blur speeding along trails and roads. Adult Foenaran runners are loyal companions but not given to large displays of affection, and they are often wary of strangers. As hatchlings they can be kept in buildings, but as adults they need wide open spaces to run in, and a runner lacking this space will become angry and destructive.
Known for their great speed, Foenaran runners are the messengers of the magi world. Easily the size of the average person, runners are energetic, wild, and hyperactive, barely resting in between bouts of running and kicking. Along with their speed and the males' ability to set themselves on fire, they are also able to shake their stiff feathers with a sound like a rattlesnake, a warning to any predator that approaches them or their nests. Males and females differ in colour, but both have long, powerful legs with massive claws and thick, heavily muscled tails that they can use like whips. They are native to the grasslands and friendly with others of their kind, leading to great games of run and chase across the plains.
