Your little blue sea star has hatched and is busily crawling around. When you let it crawl onto your hand, you can feel dozens of tiny suction cups clinging to you. You feed it tiny clams you get from the fine soil at the bottom of the stream, and it can devour a surprising amount of those. While its back is covered with several spots of various colors, it doesn’t seem to be able to make more than one of them glow at the same time yet.

Celestial sea stars are rather big creatures with rows of multi-colored spots on each of their five arms. They can make these spots glow and grow dark at will, thus being able to make various patterns of light appear on their top. Usually, only a few of those spots are glowing faintly, but when two or more celestial sea stars meet, they will begin to blink rapidly in complicated patterns that are difficult to follow. While most people think this is just a way to impress rivals or potential mates, there are scholars who maintain this is an intricate language made up of colors and patterns and that celestial sea stars must therefore be more intelligent than it would appear. One particular group has been trying to decode that language for more than a decade now, but they have yet to make a breakthrough that will prove the theory. Celestial sea stars can be trained to make some simple patterns of light and colors on command, making them useful for giving signals over a distance at night. The magis of the Keep make use of that ability to coordinate their efforts in situations where verbal communication would be a hindrance.
