In the rare instance that one should see a werewolf, it's obvious that they are unlike any other beast. Lycanthropes are strange in appearance, seeming to be almost fully wolf at one moment, then more human in the next. Though they can speak as well as any magi, their voices are rough and guttural, more like a growl than anything. What little people have found out about them is slowly being written down, though there are precious few who know this. There is currently no lore surrounding lycanthropes, as they are highly secretive and unwilling to share any of their history. Those fortunate enough to have seen a wolf are usually tight lipped about it, perhaps because they doubt anyone would believe them. It's almost unheard of for someone to converse with a lycanthrope – the most they're seen is a flitting shadow through the woods, easily dismissed as a trick of the eye. It's more likely to see what werewolves wish to be seen. Their marks, for instance – when angered, lycanthropes leave deep slashes in the barks of trees to serve as warnings. These cryptic messages will only appear if humans or magi take too much from the forest, or treat it in a cruel manner. Should the offending actions not cease, the perpetrator will find themselves coming to in the dark, lost somewhere deep in the woods.

Few magi have even the slightest idea these companions even exist, and fewer still have even seen them. Lycanthropes are extremely secretive, never to be seen during the daylight, and they seldom stray far from the center of the forest. They seem to have always inhabited the woods, watching over it and living in harmony with the earth. It's thought that these companions have some shared past with the lycanthropes, as the two coexist peacefully and communicate with one another with near magical speed. Even magi with close bonds to their lycanthropes will find their lupine companion listens to a werewolf over them every time. Other creatures keep their distance from these companions, as though uncertain of what they are, or perhaps too wary of becoming prey. These companions are voracious meat eaters, and there are few animals they cannot take down. They have ferocious appetites, and will rip an animal to shreds in moments, feasting on the raw flesh. Lycanthropes primarily kill weak or sick animals, and have never been known to end a human's life. There is no doubt they could, of course – lycanthropes have deadly sharp claws and teeth to match.
