An angshonae hatchling is chubby and a little unkempt in appearance, its feathers a mix of down and soft bits of cloth. They don't yet have the same tuft of yellow feathers on their heads as the adults, and their tiny wings are only just edged with red. As they grow, the males begin to develop the distinctive tassels on their long tails, and both male and female start to display golden spots of silk on their bodies. Hatchlings are mischievous and love music, so a smart magi will soon learn that they can distract their angshonae hatchling from its mischief by playing music and encouraging it to dance. Raising an angshonae can be a challenge, but they are never cruel or purposely bad, and the patient magi is rewarded with a beautiful, friendly bird that brings luck to anyone nearby.
Angshonae are odd little creatures who seem to be partially alive and partially made of scrap materials. As the story goes, the first angshonae appeared in the workshop of a couple who created both beautiful pottery and elaborate decorative knots, giving them away to anyone who asked. Intrigued by the mysterious egg, the couple hatched it and raised the resulting raggedy hatchling to a gorgeous male bird with a long train and distinctive tasseled feathers. When the angshonae left them shortly afterwards, they feared that they had failed somehow in raising it, but it soon returned with a mate, bringing luck and prosperity to the couple and everyone within their small town. All angshonae are thought to be descended from these first two birds, and while they're picky about the magi they choose to partner with, they are still considered a beautiful symbol of luck and good wishes.
