A tulguc hatchling in all its clumsy fluffiness is incapable of flight or great speed. This and its minuscule size renders it appetizing prey for any carnivorous animal. The mother tulguc is ever-watchful, though, and sure to keep an eye on her young. Tulguc hatchlings spend their time chasing insects. Lazy bumblebees, being the size of a tulguc hatchling's head, are a particular favorite. When the finger-sized hatchling tires of its hunt it will enjoy bathing in the dirt, and eating small shards of volcanic rock and other minerals. What is most distinct about tulguc hatchlings is their smell, which seems mostly dependent on their diet, and ranges from the faintest whiffs of smoke to the nastiest sulfuric odors.
The history of tulgucs is shrouded in mystery. The only known population resides in Solnis, a long abandoned city in the middle of the Etain Desert, now fallen in ruin. Many suspect that they have long since evolved from phoenixes with a hint of cross-breeding with Solnis' ancient livestock. Tulgucs are territorial and will chase away anything they perceive as a threat, no small feat given their size. Tulgucs are also very vocal both in their displeasure and bliss, and many tulgucs have been observed to chatter away throughout the day for no apparent reason. Tulgucs have a very specific power to enhance smells. They can make themselves smell like anything they've ever smelled, though it will always be a more burned and smoky version of the smell, as it would seem that it is the tulguc's flame that acts as the source.
