Polyura papio hatchlings are small enough to sit in the palm of a magi's hand, but they don't spend a lot of time doing so, preferring to explore the area around them, especially if it means something to climb. The antennae on their heads give them a highly sensitive sense of smell, which they often use to hunt down meat and insects. Papio hatchlings are raised mostly by their mothers, but they live in troops that offer plenty of babysitters if the mother needs to take a break. Their wings don't appear until they go through their cocoon stage, which can last a few weeks and can also be mildly startling to magi who suddenly come face to face with cocoons hanging from their dressers. Once hatched for the second time, they grow only a little more, remaining small enough that their delicate but strong wings can carry them.

Polyura papio live mostly in jungle climates, where they often congregate around rivers and streams. Less common than their adelpha cousins, they're also slightly bigger and can be more aggressive if provoked. Papio are rarely found alone, instead choosing to live in troops of various sizes, led by an adult female. Within these troops, they often communicate in a sign language that magi don't really understand, which can differ through different family groups. Polyura papio also seem to spend a lot of time around manticore prides, and often feed on whatever's left once the manticores are done with a kill.
