Despite its large size, an adult istiora is a gleaming, graceful creature, capable of leaping high above the waves and arrowing swiftly below them. They often travel great distances across all the oceans of the world, though they prefer to keep to deeper waters where they can easily hunt. Their large bills and their ability to create shockwaves easily enable them to slash through a school of fish, protect themselves from predators, or make their displeasure at being approached known. The ability to create a shockwave comes from the lightning that flashes around their bills but magi aren't entirely sure how they create it, or how they control its force. Much more research is needed to determine why paxir break apart ice floes when they reach northern waters, but a few magi simply think they do this because it entertains them to make a loud noise and destroy the floe.
Paxir istiora can be found in oceans all over the world, including the icy waters of the north, though they seem to prefer more temperate zones. Istiora are large, heavy creatures that can not only outgrow many boats, but also outswim them. For this reason - and because the oceans are so large - few magi have been able to study them extensively, and those that do encounter them on the open sea are often driven away by their ability to create a shockwave. Eggs are also well-hidden, but a handful of istiora have been raised by researchers, at least until they outgrow their pools and have to be released. Paxir istiora have been known to break apart ice floes with their shockwave ability, when they travel north; in warmer waters, they will occasionally break small fishing boats in order to steal the day's catch.
