Hi! Lunaheart here! This is a story branching off from my other story Marked by Runes. You do not need to read Marked by Runes to understand this story. This takes place years after MBR. This does tie in a bit with MBR but not too much for you to have to read MBR (although reading MBR is always a good thing ) So, please enjoy! I;m pretty sure I will change the name soon, it was an on-spot name so I can post this.

NOTE: Does have PG-13 swearing and action (fighting and whatnot) in it so be warned!

Myna: a forty-four year old woman with heavily layered black angled hair that reaches just past her shoulders. She has fiery red-orange eyes that change with her mood. She does have a short-temper.Is a fire and dark magi.

Adara: a short girl with long auburn hair and sky blue eyes. She has a sweet demeanor but don't be fooled. She can be quiet a handful. Loves showing off her perfect curves. She is one to lie on the shore of the lake and get a tan. Around her right wrist is black runes. She has a miststalker as her first companion.

Skye: an average height girl with medium length blonde with deep violet eyes. She is just like Adara with perfect curves but she would rather spend time with her creatures than tan on the beach. She can do that later. She is very sweet but will seriously kick you ass if you pull something stupid on her or on her friends. She is a little quiet and is very shy around guys. She will think before taking action. Around her left wrist is a tattoo of black runes.

Derik: a tall muscular, broad shoulder boy with short, messy light brown hair and sea green eyes. His entire appearance suggests he will kick you butt if you make him mad. He likes to work out and will exercise with his creatures to make sure that he and his creatures are in tip-top shape. He is a good leader, but will rush head on into battle without thinking. He will take action before he thinks anything through. Hidden by his boots circling both ankles are tattoos of black runes.

Daniel: a tall muscular boy with short dirty blonde hair and a sporty appearance and brown eyes. He is very much an athelte. He is a great friend and is very loyal to his friends and companions. He would rather follow then lead. A big flaw of his is that he trusts books better than his instincs. He will not put up with crap. Hidden underneath his shirt, going from his right side and ending at his right hip are black runes.

James: a tall boy with medium length brown hair and brown eyes. He is just as lean and fit as the other boys but is quieter than the other boys. He does talk but is not the one for long conversations. He is a good friend but won't take crap from anyone. He thinks before acting and would rather trust his instincs and what he has learned. A big flaw of his is that he uses his strength and magic more often than not. Hidden underneath his hair he has his ears pierced with diamonds on both ears (with shorter hair you would notice them). Cicling up his left leg starting at his ankle and ending halfway up his shinn are black runes.

Prologue



“Gather around! Gather around, students!” a lady in her forties calls out to the students.
Myna, a forty-four year old woman with heavily layered black angled hair that reaches just pas her shoulders, stands at the front of a group of students that can’t be more than fifteen to sixteen year old. Her fiery red-orange eyes scan the students. She rolls her eyes at the nervousness of these kids. Her short-temper shoes quiet often with these students.
They stand at a crystal clear stream about a mile from a grand Keep. Various eggs float down this stream from eggs on fire to eggs with wings protruding from the sides. The students do not belong to the Keep in the distance rather they study at Odhran Keep and Academy with Myna, the fire magi and owner of Odhran Keep.
Myna scans the group: three boys and two girls. She knows exactly what she has gotten into. Her own adopted daughter, Ebony, was just like these kids once upon a time. These students are all orphans. They are the some of the last descendants of a race of magi that used to be powerful and very secretive. Ebony of Darh-Kai Keep found each and every one of these teenagers and sent them to Odhran for a special purpose; one that they all agreed on.
These students will become part of a secret organization called the Alpha Mages. They will grow to protect certain places and go on certain quests that even the greatest mages will not attempt.
The students gather around Myna. “You all know why you are here and you all show potential to become great mages. One by one you will walk up to this stream. You will take one egg; one egg that calls out to you the loudest. You will know which creature is the one for you,” Myna says in a strong, powerful voice. “Adara, you may go first.”
A short girl with long auburn hair tied in a poor low pony and sky blue eyes steps forward. She wears dark brown shorts with a dark blue tank top that does show off a lot of skin seeing as she has perfect curves in all the right places. Her skin tight, dark brown knee high lace up boots make her look like an angel that lost her wings in a fall. Adara looks at Myna and then at the stream before her.
One by one the eggs float by her, none calling to her. As a pearl white egg floats by her, a small buzz in the back of her mind alerts her to the egg after it. A green egg with very light black spots on the side calls to her, loudly. She reaches for the egg and picks it out of the water with both hands. Immediately a mist encloses the egg. The hatchling inside stops calling to her. Adara smiles as she hears a soft purr in the very back of her mind.
This is her egg.
She walks back to Myna and sits in the shade of one of the trees nearby just like the others in her class. Myna nods. “Derik, you’re next, my boy.”
A muscular, broad shoulder boy with short, messy light brown hair and sea green eyes walks up to the stream. He wears a black sleeveless shirt with a dark grey pants that aren’t baggy but not skin tight with black combat boots. His entire appearance suggests he will kick you butt if you make him mad. He kneels by the stream, patiently waiting for an egg to call to him.
Derik waits just like Adara did for an egg to call out to him. He watches the eggs float by him one by one, none calling to him. Finally, the buzzing comes as his egg calls to him. He looks about the stream until his eyes fall upon a golden-brown egg with brown wings protruding from both sides. With both hands, Derik picks up the egg and walk back to sit under a tree with the boys.
“Daniel, you’re up.”
A muscular boy with short dirty blonde hair and a sporty appearance jumps to his feet. He brushes off his brown pants (much like the ones that Derik wears) and straightens his black shirt. His brown eyes scan the stream as he nears the water.
He waits, shifting his position every few minutes. Finally, an egg calls to him. He reaches and grabs hold of an egg that seems to be a copper pearl. He walks back to Derik and sits next to him, wondering what kind of eggs are these.
“James, get your ass moving, boy!”
A boy with medium length brown hair and brown eyes looks up from staring at the grass. He is just as lean and fit as the other boys but is quieter than them. He wears black pants (same style as the other boys of course) and a dark grey shirt with black combat boots. He gets up and walks over to the stream. Immediately, a green egg with a red and black tail and leathery bat wing protruding from the sides of it calls out to James. He picks the egg up without hesitation and walks back to tree the boys are resting under.
Myna looks about for the last girl. She finds her next to Adara. “Skye, you’re turn,” Myna says to the girl.
The girl walks out from beneath the shade of the tree. Her medium length blonde hair flutters about her face and into her deep violet eyes. She wears black shorts with black combat boots and a black tank top that shows a lot of skin on her chest. She walks up to the stream and sits back on her heels. She waits patiently for the right egg to float by. A low buzzing starts in the back of her mind and slowly makes its way to the front, increasing in strength as she reaches out with fingerless, black leather gloved hands to pick up a black egg with two black wings protruding out of the sides. She stands and walks back to Adara.
Myna smiles at the students. “Adara has chosen a mist stalker to be her first companion. Derik has a gryphon, a soot gryphon to be exact, as his first companion. Daniel has a copper pearl wyrm. James has chosen, not to my surprise, a manticore as his first companion. Skye has a black pegasus as her companion. Now, shall we journey back to Odhran? Or would you guys like to rest here for the night?”
The students agree upon traveling back to the Keep. They walk back to where they tethered their horses, regular horses. They mount up and ride back to Odhran, knowing that the next day they have their first lessons.

I'm working on chapter one right now. I don't think I'll add to much history into the first chapter, but I will gradually entroduce the history within the next few chapters. Thank you for reading it and I hope I can get the chapter up by tonight or tomorow.

Chapter 1: Class Begins



“Adara…Adara….ADARA!” Skye says.
Slowly, but surely, Adara opens her eyes. “What?” she asks grumpily.
Skye is standing beside Adara’s bed, her violet eyes scanning Adara’s face. “We have an hour before breakfast. Let’s get ready. Do you want the bath first and I can pull out the clothes? Or vise versa?”
Adara smiles. “You can bathe first. I’ll pull everything else out.”
Skye smiles back. “Alrighty.”
Skye walks back out of the room and to the bathroom. Adara slowly gets out of bed. She rummages around her wardrobe and pulls out her normal clothes. Adara walks into the small living room and to Skye’s bedroom. She pulls out Skye’s clothes and lays them on her bed. They wear the same style of clothes, but in different colors. As Adara finishes getting everything out, Skye hops back out of the bath with a towel rapped around her wet body. “You’re up!” she says.
Adara nods and hops into the warm bath water and cleans up. As she gets out, Skye comes in with a towel rapped around her body and hands Adara her clothes. Adara nods her thanks as Skye goes to put her clothes on.
Over her undergarments, she puts on her black leather, skin tight tank top. She pulls on her black shorts and black boots. Over the tank top she pulls on a white, skin tight sleeveless leather vest that ties in the front, and hooks the neck clip. She walks out to help Skye with her hair and makeup and vise versa.
Sitting on the couch waiting for Adara is Skye with the same style of clothes except the vest is black and the tank top is white. “What do you want for your hair, Adara?” Skye asks.
“Um…I’ll go with a ponytail today. How about you?”
“Pin straight please.”
The girls do each other’s hair perfectly. Then the makeup with black eyeliner, mascara, and dark eye shadow. Both girls could take on mermaids in a beauty contest and perhaps win. Skye puts on her black fingerless leather gloves. They grab their satchels with their eggs in them and head down to breakfast.
“So, what kind of magic are you thinking of specializing in, Skye?” Adara asks as they descend the many steps to the first floor.
“I’m thinking of air for my first, and second I’m thinking fire. I am from Voltar after all.”
“Are you’re parents fire mages?”
“Well, my father is but my mom is an air magi. I don’t want to disappoint either of them so I’m going to specialize in both. What about you?”
“I’m thinking of earth and water.”
“Nice. So where are you from?”
“My father is from the Callisto Islands and my mom is from Synara City. I was born in Synara so I guess I’m from Synara although I grew up in Callisto.”
“I hear the Callisto Islands are beautiful.”
“They are. The water is always crystal clear. I would make five foot waves and surf them whenever I was out with my dad’s surfboard. I also used to race hippocampi.”
“Really? That’s cool! What kind did you race and breed?”
“The black and white ones.”
“Aren’t those the rare ones?”
“Definently, but they also posses more stamina than the grey ones. But that may also be because we breed the best of the best.”
“My mom breeds hellhounds, but races and breeds solar hippogriffs. I used to be her top jockey; of course, my looks also got the better of most jockeys seeing that they are mostly guys.”
“So you have been working with air and fire creatures, making you more prone to taking on those elements.”
“And you have been working with earth and water creatures making you more prone to those elements.”
“True…true…but that’s not a bad thing. Besides, I have always liked those kinds of magic.”
The girls finally make it to the first floor, now traveling all the way to the opposite end of the campus. “So, what do you think about the guys that we will be having classes with?” Adara asks.
Skye smiles. “Well, James is kind of cute. Derik isn’t really my type as hot as he is. Daniel’s good looking, too. I don’t know. I will have to get to know them more. What do you think of them?”
“About the same as you although Derik is pretty darn cute.”
“Well, he looks like he has a nice personality.”
“We’ll see.”
Both girls give off giddy giggles as a few guys turn their heads toward them. They finally reach the mess hall. They see the boys at one table wearing something similar to what they had on the day before. The girls each grab a tray with a plate and utensils on it and start going around the buffet. “Should we sit with them?” Skye asks Adara.
Adara looks at Skye and then past her to the boys. Derik and Daniel are watching them like a direwolf watches her pups. “Nah…let’s save them the pain of the first day.”
The two girls head off toward a table at the far end of the mess hall near a group of younger girl students.
After about an hour, Myna comes and gets the teenagers. They follow her to the Keep’s arena which just happens to be under the Keep. The giant, football stadium wide arena is completely dirt with bleachers surrounding the entire arena. Myna leads the group to the middle of the arena. “Alfred has resolved to take his students out of the Keep for their training for the next three days. Today, you will be practicing with various elements of magic. Tomorrow, you will work with your two strongest elements. On the third day, you will pick your two elements. After that, each of you will be given a book on the elements. You will prepare a report on your two elements and the creatures that have that element within them. I will tell you more about your assignment when you get your books. Alright! Let’s start with fire! My favorite! Adara, Skye, you two can be partners. My boys can beat each other up as much as they want. Okay? Let’s get to it!”
The boys stretch their arms while the girls fix their clothes. Skye summons a fireball with great ease, throwing it one-handed at Adara. Adara catches it, a few beads of sweat forming on her forehead. She looks at Skye. “Hard to control fire when my dominant magic is water,” she says with a slight laugh.
Skye flicks her wrist up and the fire disappears from Adara’s hands. Adara snaps her finger and a small light flickers up in her hand. A few beads of sweat drip down her forehead before she releases the fire. “That’s about all I can do.”
James is throwing fireballs left and right while Daniel is blocking each and every one of them by throwing them aside with one of his hands. Derik isn’t even attempting to control fire. Myna steps in and holds her hands up to stop the class. “Switch to air,” she says.
Skye, once more, shows her dominant side with air under her control. Adara, not so much.
This time, James is the one sitting out and Derik is in throwing blasts of wind here and there. Daniel has trouble keeping up with Derik.
Once again, Myna intervenes, “Go to earth and Daniel? Get off your ass!”
Adara is now the one with the upper hand. Moving the earth to her will, she creates a stone mist stalker. Adara commands the mist stalker to move left and right, dodging the small fireballs thrown at it.
Derik throws stones here and there without effort. Daniel dodges them on the air. James sits out once more.
Myna rolls her eyes. “Get off your ass now, James! Water, let’s go, boys! Girls, you are doing marvelous.”
Adara throws streams of water at Skye while she throws them out of the way with the air.
Daniel blasts James with surges of water while James blocks them and throws shards of ice back at Daniel.
“Alright!” Myna steps in once more, “Stop, please! Adara, you are definitely an earth and water magi. Skye, air and fire. James, fire and water which, by far, is very interesting seeing as they are two very different elements. Derik, you are a wind and earth magi that also has a unique gift with two contrasting elements. Daniel, water and air, a very common yet powerful combination. If you will follow me please, we will be off to the Grounds.”
The class exits the Arena and out of the Keep. As they continue to walk, they approach a group of seniors, each having one of their companions standing, sitting, laying, or perching next to them. “Students, these are a few of the graduating seniors. I will assign you a senior to be your mentor in both magic and creature care. They will teach you what they know. This does not mean that you will not have teachers. You will meet your teachers by the time I am done assessing you. When I give you your mentor, please step away from the group and get to know each other.
“Let’s begin, shall we? Adara, your mentor is Katie. Katie is a major in water magic and seconds in earth. Skye, your mentor is Jason who is a major in both air and fire and seconds in earth. Darla, a major in both fire and water, will be mentoring James. Derik will be working with Fred, a major in wind and minor in earth. Last but not least, Daniel, you will be working with Clent, a major in both water and air. See you all in a few hours.”
Adara and Katie sit down a little ways away from where Myna was just standing. Katie wears a short cream lace-up vinyl trimmed dress that stops just above her knees with a brown leather waist satchel. On her arms are puff sleevelettes, and over her dress is a dark green leather petticoat. Her dark leather, knee high boots are tightly tied and her long blonde hair is neatly in a French braid.
Sitting next to Katie is a fully grown mist stalker with his dark green leopard coat. His dark brown spiral horns rising menacingly behind his ears. His yellow eyes dart to and fro, looking for something that suggests trouble. The tiger sized mist stalker seems like a gigantic threat, but once told to calm down, he is as sweet as a housecat.
“So, Adara, what kind of egg do you have?” Katie asks.
“I have a mist stalker.”
“Oh, really? They strengthen your earth magic by a lot and they are amazing companions. Isn’t that right, Din?”
Din, Katie’s mist stalker, stops looking around with menacing eyes and becomes a sweet lovable leopard with a big purr. Katie scratches Din behind the ears. “You see, mist stalkers can be mean looking and all, but they are big sweethearts. I mean, look at Din. He looks like a threat but he is as sweet and energetic as a kitten.”
As if cued, Din purrs. He rolls onto his side like a kitten would. “So, how much earth magic can you control?”
“Well,” Adara starts, “I really want to major in water and second in earth.”
“Oh? Well, water magic is much easier to control. Make an orb of water.”
Adara forms a water orb and holds it out in front. “Feel the push and pull of your magic? Just like waves, the magic will flow in and out when you control is relaxed. But, if you were to spray someone that magic would become like a wind with one direction in mind and the whole calm demeanor will disappear.”
Adara nods, understanding dawning on her face.
“Anyway, you and I are going to take a trip to Remy’s Inn because I have some business to attend to there and I would like you to come,” Katie says as they stand up and walk down to the stables.


Skye and Jason walk along the hallways of the stables. “What kind of egg do you have?” Jason asks.
Skye shrugs. “A dark pegasus.”
Jason nods. “Nice.”
Jason wears dark brown traveling pants, boots, a plain white shirt with a leather jacket, and a sword by his side, nothing real special. In both of his boots are daggers, just in case. Jason runs a hand through his short brown hair, his green eyes scanning the stalls for something or someone. “Where are we going?”
Jason looks at Skye. “You’ll see.”
Jason stops at a stall meant for two. “What’s in there?” Skye asks, curiosity getting the better of her rather than fear.
“Two of my darlings.”
Jason opens the door and walks in. “Come on, they won’t bite…um…hopefully,” he says.
Skye walks into the stable after Jason. Standing in the corner together are two solar hippogryphs. The orange eagle half ruffles the feathers and the black horse half swishes the tail. “No way…” Skye murmurs.
Jason smiles at them. “Yep! That is Solara, the female, and Syn, her mate.”
“Could I?”
“If they let you.”
Skye walks forward, eyes lowered and posture calm. She nods her head slightly and waits for a small squawk from the hippogryphs. She gets two in reply and looks the male in the eye. Instead of orange or amber eyes like most solar hippogryphs, Syn has gold. The only hippogryphs with gold eyes she knows of are her own and her friend’s. “Wait a minute…Jason Vince?”
Jason smiles. “It takes you that long Skyelar Fire?”
“Wow! How long has it been since I last saw you?”
“About three. I came to the Keep three years ago, remember?”
“I wanted to go too! I didn’t want you to go without me.”
“You were eligible…but-”
“Mom didn’t want me to go. I mean, we are only two, three years apart?”
“A year and three months.”
“And you would know, how?”
“You told your mom when you were trying to convince her to let you go with me.”
“So, you brought two of your solar hippogryphs here?”
“Brought? I bred them. I’m going to take up the racing once I get back home.”
“No way! Lucky! I don’t know what I’m going to do. I mean, this is my first year and, well, technically, I only have two years here. Next year will be my last.”
“Nice. Anyway, these are my two progenitors. I haven’t really had the time with all my studying to actually race them once. So, you want to take Syn or Solara?”
Skye smiles. “I’ll take Solara.”
“Ah…going for the female.”
“Like usual. Besides, I’m going to beat the crap out of you!”
“As if! They aren’t saddle trained yet so we are going to have to go bareback.”
Jason clicks his tongue and Syn follows him out of the stall. Solara looks at Skye and nods her eagle head. The boys are going down! Solara hisses in Skye’s head.
Skye smiles. “Oh yes they are.”


James, Daniel, Derik, and their mentors ride out on regular horses to Remy’s Inn. “Yo! Daniel! Come over here!” Derik says. “You too, James!”
The boys ride behind their mentors. “What do you want, Derik?” James asks in a monotone voice.
Derik, riding the bay horse as if he is king of the world, smiles at the two boys. “I like the two girls that we have in our class. What do you think of them?” Derik asks.
James shrugs, not caring one way or the other. “They are okay, I guess,” he says.
“Are you kidding? Both of them are hot as hell and look like total opposites,” Daniel retorts.
“If that is what you like…” James sighs, riding ahead.
“He likes that Skye girl,” Derik says to Daniel.
“How would you know?”
“Have you seen the way he looks at her? He looks like a hellhound puppy watching his master.”
“Who do you like better?”
“That Adara girl looks like a charmer…and she is more confident than Skye.”
“Tell me about it…”
“What about you?”
“Neither. I have a girlfriend back home.”
“Long distance?”
“By phoenix.”
“Cool.”
“James isn’t much of a talker is he?”
“No, but then again he is from the Etain Desert.”
“I’m from Voltar, idiot!” James yells.
“My bad! He also has ears like a hawk!” Derik says.
“That’s because you two talk as if you were a mile away, Derik!” James calls back once more.
Derik rolls his eyes. “Well, we will be spending the next two years together so get used to it!”
James looks back and glares at Derik before speeding off ahead of the mentors. “What’s his deal?” Daniel asks.
“No idea.”
They stop at Remy’s Inn and tether the horses to the poles. James is already in before anyone else. “James, my boy! Long time, hu? How is your sister?” Remy asks over the bar counter.
James glares at the man. “She’s dead.”
Remy stops what he is doing. “The older one or the younger?”
“Both.”
“Oh. How? When?”
“A few days before I came here they went in search of a fire drake. They found a molten bone dragon instead. They tried to get away, but the dragon killed them instantly thinking that they were after her eggs.”
“I’m so sorry.”
“I don’t need your sympathy!”
“Well, there’s no need to snap at me.”
“Do I need to remind you why I don’t care for you that much?”
Remy scratches his head. “No, boy, you don’t.”
James walks away to the farthest table he can find, remembering what happened to his older sister when she came here to visit Remy. They had way too much to drink and disappeared together for Remy’s room. His sister never came back to Remy’s Inn for another drink ever again.
“Daniel! How are you, kid?” Remy calls to Daniel.
“Fine, thanks!”
“Who’s your friend?”
“Remy, this is Derik. Derik, this is Remy.”
“Nice to meet you, sir.”
“No need to be polite, boy! What would you like? Cider? Ale? Some new eggs?”
“Remy, they aren’t allowed to get a new egg yet. They have to wait until Myna tests them,” one of the mentors, Darla, says.
“That’s a long way away, Darla Dear.”
“Remy, just bring us some cider.”
“Right away, sweetheart!”
“So, Daniel, where are you from?” Darla, James’ mentor asks as she smoothes out her short, black halter top dress with jewels on the halter top.
“I’m from Synara City. Born and raised in the north side.”
“What do your parents do for a living?”
“Oh, they breed and raise some of Synara’s mounts like pegasi, hippogryphs, and gryphons.”
“That is always good. How about you, Derik?”
“I’m from the Alasre Mountains. I come from a city at the very base of the mountains. My parents breed and raise direwolves and rocs.”
“We all know about James.”
“Yep.”
“Here ya go! Fresh cider! Don’t worry, there’s no alcohol in it,” Remy says as he gives everyone a glass of cider.
“Well, here is to the two years of training at Odhran Keep!” Derik says, raising his glass of cider.

So...it isn't much, but it is a start! More action and whatnot will come later. Comments? Ideas? Critisism? Questions?

There are a few spelling mistakes and wrongly use of vocabulary terms. Try reading the chapters back and you can spot the errors.
