Chapter 2: Hatchlings
Chapter 2: Hatchlings
“Come on, James! You can do better than that! Daniel, get off your ASS! Derik, keep throwing fire! Good grief!” Myna screams at the boys.
James is getting beat up by Daniel, Daniel is getting thrown off his feet by Derik, and Derik stops every time both boys are down. “Good job, girls. Maybe the boys can learn to be more persistent if they watch you for a while,” Myna praises the girls.
Adara smiles at Skye. “So…what did you do with your mentor?” Adara asks.
Skye smiles. “I kicked his butt in a solar hippogryph race.”
“Seriously?”
“Seriously. We are going to race again today.”
Adara raises her eyebrows. “How did he know you race hippogryphs?”
Skye smiles and stops the fireball that she was about to send. “We grew up together.”
Adara stops the water she was about to throw. “Whoa, wait…you mean you grew up together? Now he is your mentor? And he is taking you on in a race?”
Skye nods, a big smile on her face.
“Sounds like he has a little crush on you.”
Skye starts to blush, a small fire forming in her hand.
Adara gasps. “Don’t tell me you like him!”
“I have…for over a year now.”
“Skye!”
“What?”
“That’s so-”
“Myna? I’m here to take Skye!” Jason calls into the Arena.
“What was that about him crushing on me again?” Skye asks Adara quietly.
Adara giggles as Skye walks over to the arena entrance. As they disappear into the tunnel, side by side, James glares deeply at Jason. Adara notices it and makes a note of it to tell Skye later.
“So? Why did you come get me? We have another hour before we are supposed to meet up,” Skye says.
Jason smiles at her. “Solara said something about an egg is ready to hatch?”
“I don’t know anything about…a…egg…oh my gosh! Where is my egg?” Skye says.
Jason laughs. “Relax! It’s with Solara.”
Skye lets out a sigh. “Thank goodness! I was about to flip out for a second.”
Jason rolls his eyes with a smile on his face. “Come on, Skye. You don’t want to miss this!”
“I’ve seen plenty of eggs hatch, but the hatching always amazes me!”
Skye smiles at Jason as they walk out of the Keep and to the stables. With quite a lot of pushing and shoving like brother and sisters, they finally make it to Solara and Syn’s stall. Sitting in a soft pile of hay is Skye’s egg. It shakes and rattles about, the little wings flapping hard. Jason and Skye sit down to watch the egg hatch. Suddenly, the little egg starts to crack. With a mighty flap, the egg turns itself upside down. The cracks get bigger and bigger until the egg shatters to reveal a little male, black pegasus upside down on his back. With a lot of struggling, the little foal rights himself. In a few seconds, he stands up on all four wobbly legs. “Have you ever seen a horse stand up that fast?” Jason asks Skye.
“Only once.”
“What are you going to name him?”
Skye watches the hatchling for a moment. The colt runs to and fro, kicking up straw like it is nothing. He flaps his little ebony wings in his attempt to try and get off the ground. He only succeeds in falling face forward into another pile of straw. Skye smiles. “Blackjack. His name is Blackjack,” she says.
“And your genius reason as to why you named him that?”
“Well, that was the name of a black quarter horse I used to own until a kuras tiger attacked and killed him.”
“So, you named him after your dead horse?”
“I named him after the only other horse that was able to stand within minuets of birth.”
“That is an excellent reason and name.”
“Why, thank you!”
“Now, about that race…”
“You’re going down! Again!”
“One thing…”
“What?”
“I get Solara this time…”
James turns back to face Derik just in time to keep his feet as Derik throws another fireball at him.
“Alright! Alright…stop,” Myna says after another fifty minutes of practice. “You have about ten minutes before you report to your mentors! Get out of here!”
The teens rush to clean up before they see the seniors. No one wants to hang with anyone that is sweaty and stinky. Adara is the first to reach her mentor. “Hey, Adara!” Katie says in a joyful voice.
Adara is taken aback. “You’re pretty happy. What’s up?” Adara says.
“Did you check your egg today?”
“No, you have it, don’t you?”
“Well…it’s hatching!”
“No way!”
“Way!”
Katie pulls out Adara’s mist stalker egg and sets it on the ground. The egg shakes back and forth violently. Two cracks appear at the top. With more violent shaking, the little kitten’s two horns poke through the top of the egg. With another heave, the egg rolls upside down. A mighty kick from within the egg shatters the rest of the egg to reveal a tiny green kitten with dark brown horns. A small growl emits from the kitten’s throat as it glares at Katie. The kitten runs to stand in front of Adara, puffing itself up.
“Ah! You have a kitten with an attitude! Like I said earlier: very protective. What’s…um…his name?” says Katie
“Jester. His name is Jester. See how is trying to be all big and ferocious? Watch this!” Adara says with a smile.
Adara pokes Jester’s butt making the kitten jump high in the air to land facing Adara. Jester looks at her with a sparkling light in his eyes. He purrs as deep as a kitten can purr as he rubs himself against Adara’s leg. Jester jumps into Adara’s lap, and starts climbing her shirt until he comes to a stop on her shoulder. Adara sits there with a kitten slumped over her right shoulder. “Jester suits him nicely,” Katie says.
Adara looks at the kitten and laughs, making the rumbling purr from Jester sound like a retarded dragon’s roar.
James and his mentor Darla sit under a tree while staring at James’ egg which is shaking violently. Darla looks at the egg and smiles. “That manticore is going to be a handful, James,” she says.
James nods, watching the hatching egg intently. The tail thrashes to and fro, the wings flapping hard against the shell. A few cracks appear on the side of the egg. After another violent shake, a green paw with tiny black claws bursts through the egg’s shell. With much pushing and shoving, the little hatchling finally tumbles out of the shell in a very majestic manner, landing on her feet and puffing her tiny green mane up.
The green kitten unfolds her black and red leather eggs as she shakes her green coat. She stretches her black socked front legs and gives a mighty yawn. The dark green mane of hers settles back down as she looks from Darla to James. She lashes her black and red snake tail swishes to and fro, light green eyes scanning both magi before resting on James. The little kitten purrs, bunching her back legs together. She leaps into the air, flapping her wings fast and smooth before landing in James’ lap, and curling up for a sleep. James gives off a small laugh. “I like her,” Darla says. “So what’s her name?”
“I’ll name her after my youngest sister, Vinstresa.”
“How old was your little sister?”
“Eight,” James says through his teeth.
The little kitten looks up at her magi’s unhappiness. She mews and gently nips James’ finger. “What was your older sister’s name?”
“Clorisa.”
“Fire magi?”
James nods.
“My brother used to date her when they were learning at Odhran.”
“Oh?”
“She was really strong headed. She had a Gryphon named Tourniquet right?”
“Yep…they were really close. He was Risa’s first creature. He ran away when learned about her death. I don’t know if he is still alive. I heard someone say he tried to fight the dragon and ended up being burned alive. Either way, he was never coming back.”
“He must have been really close to be that loyal.”
“Yeah…”
Derik and Fred stop in the middle of a field. “So, what are we going to do today?” Derik asks.
Fred, who is wearing a magi’s basic clothing- a white shirt, brown pants that aren’t too tight but not too loose, dark brown traveling boots, and a satchel- sits down on the grass. “Sit, kiddo,” he says to Derik while smoothing his short, dirty blonde hair.
Derik sits and looks at Fred. After a few seconds, Fred pulls out Derik’s egg. The egg shakes from time to time, as if the creature within it is wondering if it should hatch or not. Finally, after ten minutes of staring at the damn egg, the egg begins to crack. The little wings struggle to become in tune with its body. After another ten minutes, the egg shatters, a baby gryphon hatchling sitting where the egg once was. It stands, the dark grey eagle half stretching its front legs and digging into the ground with sharp black talons. The tan slash grayish lion half sticks in the air as the eagle half stretches. The little hatchling stretches its dark grey feathered wings as far as it can before bringing them back into a nice fold along its side.
“That’s a fine lookin’ gryphon, kiddo. Whatcha gonna name ‘em?” Fred asks, looking at the hatchling with dark grey eyes.
Derik thinks for a moment. “Dicaro.”
“Good name, kiddo. Now, let’s see what we are gonna do with y’all…”
Derik rolls his eyes at his mentor, clearly not caring one way or the other. As long as the girls look at him and his little hatchling, he will be fine. A smile crosses his face as he tries to think of what Adara might say to his new companion.
Clent walks ahead of Daniel. Clent, wearing simple magi styled clothing and a dark brown leather satchel slung at his side, scans the area for a suitable stop for a wyrm to hatch. Clent finds a soft, shady spot under a tree. The two sit down and wait for the egg to hatch. It doesn’t take long for the wyrm to burst forth from within the egg. The egg shell shatters into millions of pieces as the copper pearl wyrm throws the shell off and away from him as if it where a leaf. The long, serpent like body of the wyrm unwinds itself from a ball like position. The wyrm’s two front legs are further from the back legs than a dragon’s and the wyrm doesn’t have any wings. Two little whiskers hang down from the hatchling’s muzzle. “What are you going to name him?” Clent asks Daniel.
“I don’t know…what should I name him?”
“That is for you to decide.”
“But can’t you tell me what a good name is?”
“No.”
“Please?”
“No.”
“I know! Clent!”
“What?”
“That’s what I want to name him.”
“You will not name a creature after me, got it?”
“Yes…”
The two boys sit in silence, waiting for a name to come to the younger boy. Finally, Daniel snaps his fingers and points at Clent. “McCabe! That’s his name.”
“As long as it isn’t Clent.”
Daniel flashes Clent a smile. He thought of a good name, and he is proud of it! Maybe one day he could ride McCabe?
Myna watches as the teens and their new hatchlings from the top most tower of Odhran Keep. Using a simple spell that lets her eyes see farther than normal- much like dragon eyes- she can see what is happening to each and every individual. A dark figure walks up behind Myna. “Myna, do you think they will be ready in two years?” a feminine voice laced with a dragon’s growl says.
The figure walks out from the shadows. A woman with dark brown hair tinted heavily with strands of violet and dark tan skin walks to stand beside Myna. From her head are two dark tan horns that curve up. She wears a deep violet dress with a halter top. The dress doesn’t have a back and shows her skinny stomach through the fire pattern that curves around her stomach and her lower back. The patter stops at the waist where a deep violet skirt part of the dress that angles down from six inches above the knee of the woman’s right leg to a little below the woman’s left knee. White sparkling jewels line the curving waistline of the dress and accentuate the curving fire pattern of the dress.
“Do we really have a choice, Doytan? They must become fully fledged mages in two years. They can do it."
“Why?”
“They must be ready to protect each domain of this country. They have to, either wise we will be getting slammed by every side. War is nearing us and fast."
"I know, Myna."
“Doytan, I’m on the verge of a nervous breakdown.”
“I’ve seen you have a nervous breakdown before. I was scared half to death!”
“Doytan…”
“Sorry, Myna.”
"Now, if you please, I need to rest. I didn’t get any sleep last night. The hellhounds got loose and it took me all night to get them.”
“Very well, Myna.”
Doytan walks out to the balcony. She stands on the railing. “Get some sleep, Myna. I’ll be back before dinner to wake you,” Doytan says.
Doytan leaps from the railing, changing from the human form into a dark bone dragon as she does so. Myna shivers. “I hate it when she does that…damn bone dragon,” she mutters before walking back into the tower and shutting the doors behind her.

Chapter 3: Flying Lessons Gone Wrong
Okay, I lied. Here is Chapter 3!
Chapter 3: Flying Lessons Gone Wrong
Three weeks passes after the hatchlings hatched. Skye’s pegasus hatchling, Blackjack, has grown significantly large- as big as regular three month old foal- large enough to start training him to not be such a brat. Skye and Jason walk about the pegasi pasture, looking for one stallion in particular; Jason’s stallion. They eventually find the winged horse standing among white pegasi mares. “Obsidian, come here, boy!” Jason calls to the horse.
Immediately, the big black horse opens his ebony wings and flies over to Jason, Skye, and Blackjack. Blackjack lashes at Skye with his coal black wings, trying to break free from the dark blue halter’s grip. Skye gives a small tug on the lead rope, breaking Blackjack’s concentration at getting free. “No,” Skye says in a reprimanding voice.
Blackjack glares at her before nipping her pants. “Ow! Stop it!”
The little foal turns his back on Skye and flattens his ears, not liking the halter or the fact that he can’t do anything he wants. He swishes his tail back in forth, showing how angry he his. Jason's stallion shakes his head and whickers affectionately at Jason. “Hey, boy! How are?” Jason asks.
The horse turns his head to look at Jason in the eyes, telepathically having a conversation. Ever since Myna's daughter taught Myna how to communicate telepathically, Myna has taught some of the teachers as well. The students, if they want to communicate with their creatures like that, could learn via private lessons. Most students at the Keep learn how to talk to their companions telepathically.
Take this stupid lead thing off of me right now! Blackjack calls out to Skye in her head.
Skye turns a deadly glare onto her hatchling. Hush it! I have a treat for you if you are willing to not be a brat!
Blackjack’s ears twitch to a forward position. He turns around to face Skye, a light sparkling in his eyes. Really?
Yes, really! Now apologize to me and I will tell you what we will be doing.
Blackjack turns his entire body to face Skye. With droopy ears, he looks Skye in the eyes. Sorry, Skye…
Skye smiles and scratches Blackjack behind his ears. If he wasn’t stubborn and cute, he wouldn’t be her Blackjack. “Jason, you ready?” she asks Jason.
Jason nods. Skye turns back to Blackjack and smiles. You’re going to learn how to fly today, she says.
Blackjack’s ears fly up along with his head. No way! he calls into her head.
Way.
The little horse rears back and jumps into the air, delighted at actually learning to fly. Jason's stallion rolls his eyes at the little colt. Blackjack catches the movement and glares at the bigger horse. Skye unhooks the lead rope and tosses it to the ground. With both hands, she grabs onto the halter. “You be good, and I’ll let you off the halter more often, okay?’
Blackjack nods his head. Jason mounts his horse Obsidian and holds his hand out to Skye. Skye takes hold of his hand and jumps up behind him, blushing the entire time. Obsidian looks at the colt. Keep up with me if you can, kid, he says to the colt.
Blackjack cocks his head. How?
You run, jump into the air and flap both wings together. You’ll get the hang of it eventually.
But-
Obsidian shakes his head before taking a running start, Blackjack on his heels. The stallion spreads his wings out to their full length- nearly three times the size of himself. With a mighty leap, the horse surges into the air, flapping both wings simultaneously. Skye grabs hold of Jason in a near bear hug as they fly upward almost at a ninety degree angle. Once at least three hundred feet into the air, Obsidian levels out. Skye releases some of her grip, but still takes pleasure in holding on to Jason.
Blackjack’s wings droop beside him as he sees how easily the stallion took off. He shakes himself once, and rushes forward in a fast gallop. He opens his wings and flaps them, testing their ability before jumping into the air as high as he can go. With mighty flaps, the colt tries to pull himself into the air. He only succeeds in falling to the ground.
Obsidian’s laughing neighs come to him. You started flapping your wings to late. Wait until you are at the peek of your jump, kid, the stallion instructs Blackjack.
Blackjack shakes himself to a stand. He starts to run again, increasing speed so he can jump once more. He opens his wings and jumps into the air. He flaps hard once more, and feels joy seer into his chest as he goes high from the ground instead of closer to it. Along with flapping his wings, he grabs at the air with his legs, galloping as well. Obsidian hovers in the air, waiting for the colt to get to him. As Blackjack get’s closer to Skye, he sees a giant smile on her face. The little colt feels pride in him as he sees his companion’s happy face.
James watches Skye, Jason, and the black pegasi from a distance. Jealousy and the pang of defeat cores through him as he watches Skye hold onto Jason. If only she remembered...“Ow!” James cries out as sharp teeth sink into his arm.
The teeth didn’t penetrate deep enough to draw blood, but it still hurt. James turns his glare onto Vinstresa. “Vin, that wasn’t nice!” James reprimands the manticore hatchling.
The hatchling is as big as a male lion and teeth as sharp as one. Her wingspan is also bigger. She shakes her mane and flicks her tail to the air. James rolls his eyes. “After you bit me?”
It was a nip…
James glares at the green cat. “I can’t believe you are still growing…”
Well, believe it! Cause I’m gonna be as big as that horse in the sky, if not a bit bigger!
“Then start behaving like one!”
Vinstresa puffs herself up with dignity. I do! I was trying to get you out of your love trance!
“Oh, really?”
Yeah!
“Well then…”
I’ll head butt you next time.
“I’m fine with that.”
What do you want Skye to remember?
James gives a start. He blushes slightly. “Well, when we were little, she ran into a fire drake while riding on a solar hippogryph. I saved her and the hippogryph…but I don’t think she remembers.”
She will, if you mention a fire drake.
“But she always liked that Jason guy.”
How about next time you guys are working on your battle techniques and all that, practice with Skye?
“I’ll ask her next time, then.”
Come on, can we fly? Please?
James stands up. “Go ahead, show me.”
The manticore takes a running start, then leaps into the air and spreads her wings. She flaps a few times to keep herself airborne. She banks a few times before doing a back flip in the air and landing silently in front of James. James smiles. “Nice! That was really good!”
Think I can carry you yet?
“Absolutely…not!”
Come on! Aren’t you supposed to be a bad boy?
“I won’t hurt you?”
Please! I’ve been carrying a log that ways a ton for the past week. I think I can carry you! I’m nearly as big as a young horse!
“Fine!”
James walks forward, skeptical at first before mounting the manticore. The hatchling doesn’t even falter as she starts her run. She jumps into the air, not shaking or wincing once. As they fly higher, there is still no sign that Vinstresa can’t hold James. James, you’re light! Vinstresa says after a few minutes of flying.
“When you get tired, land! Prideful or not!” James says.
The manticore chuckles, a deep rumbling purr.
Daniel and Derik walk through the fields and to the pegasi pasture. They stop a little way away from the actual pasture before looking around. They spot James take off on his manticore. The see Skye and Jason on the back of a black pegasus with a foal flying near them. “So, they are also learning out to fly, are they?” Derik says to himself.
His gryphon, which is just as big as the foal in the air, runs to Derik. The hatchling stands on his hind legs and nuzzles his friend affectionately. He turns his soot feathered head to the sky and clicks his beak. “Go on, fly away,” Derik says to the gryphon.
The hatchling clicks his beak and chirps his thanks before taking off with a mighty leap and powerful strokes of his wings. Daniel’s copper pearl wyrm takes off after the gryphon. Daniel nods to a figure off in the distance. “Is that Adara?” he asks Derik.
Derik nods. “Yes that is!”
Adara is flanked by her mist stalker; the green cat seems to be smaller than James’ manticore yet bigger than the foal. Daniel rolls his eyes as Derik begins a quick check over of himself as Adara gets closer, clearly heading to Skye and Jason. Adara’s mist stalker growls low and deep as they pass by. “Hey, Adara,” Derik says.
Adara stops in her tracks. She turns around and looks at Derik. “Hi,” she says.
“Where are you going?”
“To see if Skye wants to come to the merchant district with me. We are going to pick out a dress for Myna. It’s her birthday this weekend and she is going out with some of her friends, yet she asked us two girls to pick out a dress for her. They are going to the Delroch’s Head. Fancy tavern.”
“Nice. So, how’s your mist stalker?”
“Jester? He’s fine! Aren’t you boy?”
Her mist stalker growls at Derik before purring in answer to Adara. Derik nods to Skye. “Looks like she is down. How about we all go out to get something down at Remy’s later?”
“I’ll ask Skye if she wants to come, but other than that, sure!”
“See you around five?”
“Sure.”
“Alright, see you then!”
Adara smiles and turns away. Derik nods his head to her. “That is how you catch a girl,” Derik says to Daniel.
“I don’t need to, I have a girlfriend.”
They watch as Jason and Skye dismount the stallion they were riding. James is also on the ground. James walks over to Derik and Daniel with his manticore trailing him. “How was the fly?” Daniel asks.
“Good…I didn’t think Vin was that strong,” James says in a cool tone.
As Adara, Jason, and Skye walk away from the pasture, a growl emits from the throat of a nearby creature. Blackjack and Jester, Adara's mist stalker, walk side by side a little ways away from their mages. The growl becomes louder and the three boys turn to look at the forest behind them. Dark orange eyes stares back at the boys. From the bushes, a black panther bursts forth from the undergrowth, rushing straight for Blackjack. The foal turns just in time to see the panther rushing him. “Blackjack! Get out of there!” Skye yells to her foal.
She summons a fireball too late as the little foal flattens his ears and prepares to attack the full grown panther as the panther becomes paces away. The colt rears back and slams his hooves down on the panther’s face as the panther lashes out with claws outstretched for the foal. Both roll straight into the mist stalker and past him. Snarls and whinnies are emitted from both mouths. A terrified squeal escapes from the pegasus’ mouth as the panther lands a good blow to his face. Jester growls deep and leaps for the panther’s neck.
The panther turns in time to see a green form slam him down. With raging snarls, the mist stalker slashes the panther’s chest good and deep, blood pooling from the wound. The panther kicks Jester off and rushes once more for Blackjack only to get a face full of hooves as the black pegasus uses his hind legs to land a powerful kick to the panther’s face. Before the panther can let out another cry, Skye throws a nice fireball right at the panther’s rear end, causing the fur to burn and become scorched. The panther turns to Skye, ready to leap at her. Blackjack rears up and lands another blow to the cat’s face, send the disoriented panther backwards. As soon as the panther gets a clear view, it sprints for the undergrowth, away from the hatchlings seeing as it is clearly out matched. It should have known better than to mess with a horse with wings and a cat as its friend.
Blackjack snorts at the panther’s rear end before turning to Skye. Skye rushes him and embraces the poor colt in a near bear hug. Over his left eye are three deep claw marks that will scar over. Along his right hind leg are six scratch marks, three and three crossing over each other to make an ‘X’ on his hind leg. Those too will scar over. Jester doesn’t leave unscathed either. Over Jester’s right eye are two claw marks that will leave a nice battle scar as well.
“Blackjack, are you okay?” Skye asks.
Are you kidding? That was AWESOME!
Skye glares at the horse. “Are you serious? You could have been killed!”
Yeah! But I wasn’t!
Skye rolls her eyes at the colt.
Adara runs over to Jester. “Hey, buddy, are you okay?”
Couldn’t be better! That panther will never cross our path again. If he does, I’ll personally rip him to shreds!
Adara laughs at Jester. “Nice job, boy!”
Jason kneels by Skye and Blackjack. “I can stop the bleeding but that is about it,” he says to the horse and Skye.
Skye nods and watches Jason stop the bleeding for both her winged horse and Adara’s green cat. Once done, Jason holds out his hand to help Skye up, and then to Adara. “Come on, you two need to go dress shopping for Myna. Take these two with you and make sure you find something that will help with their pain,” Jason says, nodding to the hatchlings.
The two girls look at the hatchlings and giggle at the private conversation they are having. Hatchlings are such a handful.

Re: Project Alpha-A Keep Story-*Chapter 2 is Up*
Done reading chapter 2..
Will be back for chapter 3.
It is good as far as i read but it was quite confusing with that much of names in a single chapter. Try to slow down a bit. It would be wonderful if you could introduced the characters little by little and not all at once.
