Virion was actually incredibly lucky in my second playthrough. He dodged lethal attacks and got random criticals but I still ditched him because I don't like archers.

Marrying a 2nd gen character does result in a stronger Morgan but it depends on if you want one uber godly Morgan or two godly children. owo Also Inigo is still a flirt after he's married so that's one reason why people don't like him.

You know who dies all the time for me? Virion. He's a right pain in the arse to level up- especially if you want him to marry Lissa, because she can't help his attacks.

He's been alright for me so far haha, I'm pairing him with Maribelle - It's Donnel and Sully that's giving me the most trouble... I can at least drag the others into battle and hope I can get them to battle or heal next to each other, but Sully and Donnel can never hold their own enough in battles for me to keep them around

Hmm as far as pairings go - so far I've got
Chrom & FeMU, Lissa & Ricken, Sully & Donnel, Miriel & Lon'qu, Maribelle & Virion, Panne & Gregor, Cordelia & Stahl (another hard one, oddly enough - they do well in battle but never end up next to each other haha), Nowi & Vaike, Sumia & Henry, Olivia & Libra, and Cherche & Frederick.
Phew.

Also I'm really disappointed to hear that about Inigo - I really liked his character art :/

Have you tried pairing up units like actually putting them together with the pair up command? You get support points a lot faster that way. P: Also Donnel is a pain to train but he can solo the whole game once you can reclass him. Basically corner an archer or something and have him stab away. Or summon a Spotpass team with a cleric and have him stab that. Sully unfortunately never works out quite as well for me as Donnel.

Hahah good tips good tips! Gosh I wish I had more slots on my team so I could baby Donnel, but so far every spot has been really essential..

To be honest I that pair up option is new to me, and while I've tried it out I haven't quite figured it out yet. Last time I did it in battle I couldn't figure out how many turns each would get or which one would end up active etc etc... (to google I go~) I only ever drag sully into battle if donnel is going so they can get closer haha I much muuuch prefer Stahl.

Basically when units pair up they act as one unit. The unit in front will be the one attacking/defending. However, the unit in the back has a chance of attacking the opponent and defending the other unit so they'll receive no damage. And like I said before, the unit in front gets stat bonuses depending on the other unit's class and stats. Once you start using the pair up system it's pretty intuitive. At least for me.

I like Inigo too but I can't deal with him being a flirt.

I'm just about the worst when it comes to strategy. I chose the pretty characters that didn't die easily and then I level grinded.

Ah, I think I've figured out the pairing system - thank you ! I just needed to try it out a little more and once I figured out if the initiator was the active person or inactive person it was a lot easier haha
