Hmmm... maybe because he was trained to fight as most kids in FE are but he was horrible with swords and magic? So maybe he took up the staff and ended up joining the Strikers? He could be the youngest child in a rich family, so he couldn't inherit much and thus wouldn't be busy with managing an estate.

Rich guys can be priests. Lissa and Maribelle were noblewomen (well a princess in Lissa's case) and they ended up in healing classes. I would imagine that's actually a more acceptable class for nobles since you're not killing people.
