The Storm Without

Post by MothballMilkshake »

(I hope you don't mind my making another entry, I really wanted to try out this style of writing)

I heard a tale that long ago
Our land was fraught with ice and snow
And though they sought, the mage found no
Cure to end their plight.
And as the folk packed up to leave
One person begged upon her knees
Said to the people, ‘listen, please!’
‘We have to stay and fight.’

The gryphons sighed and shook their heads
The paervem packed up their beds
But one winged cat stood up and said
“I think she has a point.”
‘This is our home, we grew up here
We cannot let us succumb to fear.”
And all the creatures gathered near
So as not to disappoint.

The mage had hope that once they heard
The plan she’d hatched, though absurd
Could change their minds, the lesson learned
That all must stick together
“Now listen close, every one,
I think I know what must be done
To save our land, bring back the sun
We need to change the weather.’

They looked distraught, all hope gone
The younger ones began to mourn
And as they thought all ideas gone
The cat stood up and cried
“It’s not so mad – hard, it’s true
The plans’ success is up to you
To do it, all we have to do
Is find the one inside.”

To the castle was where she pointed
And as the group, once so disjointed
Came together, the mage she stated
“A hydra is within.
He hurt his foot, I’m sure of it
But if we coax him bit by bit
To come to us, we make him sit
With us to cure his skin.”

And as the plan worked itself out
The magi were cured of their doubt
And as she worked they milled about
As the hydra leaped
The wind calmed down, the clouds all parted
For the mage who’s so kind hearted
She helped a hydra, and so started
What we now call the keep

And so with kindness, and helping others
The mage made companions, sisters, brothers
They all stood with one another
And cheered our lady on
But what of our lady, and the cat
Who stood so true, the moment that
The plan was hatched, by Leville LeTratt
On our now keep’s lawn?

Their story will continue, yes
However I suppose it’s best
To leave to all to ask, and guess
What they did accomplish
But it is sure that one thing remained
A hydra shaped, large grass stain
Behind the fountain, next to the lane
To remind us of this knowledge

I really liked this! I keep trying to put it to a tune. It's very catchy! It almost had a "Androcles and the Lion" feel to it at the Hydra part. And then I really liked the moral to the story at the end.
I am wondering about one thing though: should "There story" be changed to "Their story"?
Great poem. You should write some more before the competition ends!

Just to be clear, time is not a flat circle... That is way too simplistic. It's a little more wibbly-wobbly than that. ~ Chromie

This is a nicely written story. It leaves you kinda in suspense, which draws it into a mystery of sorts. How did their story end? Guess we can only guess right?
