Does anyone make batiks or paint/dye fabric?

I've never made a traditional batik, but I like to use the fabric dye to paint my stuffed animals. (I use muslin and then add color to my stuffed animal). I know how to and what not, but I have a question for some professionals out there. After I paint my fabric, can I wash it and it be ok? The reason I ask is because my boyfriend and I are going to make a quilt... well I'm making it, he is helping choose the fabric. It'll be for our queen sized bed and be a representation of both of us. I have star wars fabric for him, zelda for myself, and black and blue for they are our shared favorite colors. I have a long ways till I get to the backing and I'm considering our possibilities, and well the thought occurred to me "Why not paint it?" But then I'm afraid the paint/dye wont hold up in the wash... it might run or something... You never really wash stuffed animals so I wouldn't have a clue.

So to all the professionals or who ever knows what they are dealing with:

Is there a fabric dye that I can use to paint the back of a quilt that will be used daily on a bed?
Is there a way to seal the color into the fabric?

My mom sews quilts, so finding another option wont be to hard. I'd prefer a softer fabric for the back though.
