Mild horror / Psycological horror / Mention of Gods
"It isn't even the most valuable thing in here!" Watching as various things he had collected being swept to the floor it was less of the value of the things broken than the loss of the artwork that they were, the beauty that they brought to the world. Restrained as he was the ebony haired man was kept from even attempting to stop the brute who had swept the trinkets off the counter with his arm. "Why do you want it so badly?!" He called next as the man who had just cleared his counter of merchandise stopped only to give a moment of pause.
"Because, Keeper, I need it." Looking to the man whom he called 'Keeper' he looked to some of the things on the floor. While some had been carefully crafted from glass or something else just as fragile some were wooden carvings that met the fate of the glass as he brought his heavy boot down atop them. "All this trash is nothing compared to what I can do with that box."
Gritting his teeth as he looked up in both anger and perhaps sorrow he nodded. "Alright. I'll tell you, just let me go and stop destroying my shop!" He said as he jerked his arms away from the men who had held him before and rubbed where their grip had dug into the skin. Surely there would be bruises. "It's not what you expect." The Keeper warned as he brought the trio to a small box that he had hidden under the floorboards in a small secret compartment covered often times by a simple woven rug.
Almost as soon as the rug was moved the Keeper was pushed aside and watched with pity on his face as the next events unfolded before him. He had tried to warn him but couldn't find the words. Perhaps it was some kind of divine punishment from whatever powers that be? Either way, there was no way to stop it now.
Lifting from the compartment a box that looked to be made of the purest white marble with only faint flecks of the crack like pattern it held in a soft blue was a carved box. Thumbing over the stone he exhaled in awe before flipping the lid open. Nothing? Pausing and then reaching in to feel for a false bottom he found nothing and shot a glare back at the Keeper who was gone? Tossing aside the box he gathered his partners before leaving.
All of the legends had said that the box held the most powerful weapon, something that everyone should fear, had been in the box.
It wasn't until too late in his life that this day had come to haunt him, for within the box was indeed the most feared thing in all the world. Nothing. It hadn't been empty at all. It had held something far darker than he could have imagined. Now laying on his deathbed he feared judgment from the gods who he firmly believed in, and as he stood before them they didn't part to allow for him to atone and pass into the afterlife, but from behind him, a heavy hand rested on his shoulder. Looking back to the figure that had placed it's hand on his shoulder the only thing he could make out was the face. The same young face that he had taken the box from that day and left it broken on the floor of the shop.
"Keeper?" Asking softly and sounding much like a scared child he felt fear crawl over him.
All that he would get was a simple nod as he turned him with his grip on his shoulder. It wasn't a cruel or crushing grip, but his hand was as cold as ice as he placed the second on his other shoulder. Walking him forward made the man look up from where the Keeper's hand was only to have his fear redoubled. Before him was what might have passed as a black mirror, only there was no reflection for the Keeper, just the Gods behind them and the man who was being led to it. It was unsettling in a way that he had never known and that he could not describe and he tried desperately to get away from the grip of this strange man but was held fast.
"What is this?!" Calling back to the Keeper the Thief had asked with his voice breaking in terror.
"This is what you sought that day." Watching the mirror before them he stopped him just before it. "I was the first to find it, and now I am its caretaker. It's something you can't know until you've lived your life. It's the void. It's not the afterlife, but rather the lack of one. The void swallows you and all you've done, good and bad, and erases you from existence. It preys on people like you and I you see. People who seek power, seek to exploit it or are just too curious. It feeds on us." Stepping back away from the Thief the Keeper watched now as he stood before the gods with his back to them to watch the events before him.
Giving them all a horrified look he had been about to run forward and go back to them when the inky blackness had struck out and around his middle like a rope, then another, as they pulled him back into the void behind them.
"When will this thing be satisfied? When will the void be filled?" One of the Gods behind the Keeper asked as this void was far more ancient than anything any had known so far.
"When everything is gone."
