I've heard Dark Souls is good, but I had a stroke in childhood and have trouble with left-right coordination and fast movement of my left hand. So games where fast reaction time is necessary are very difficult for me. I managed Secret of Mana, but it took a lot of patience to train my hands to do what was needed to play and I had no desire to play it again once finished. That's why all my faves are turn-based RPG's. Do you think I could play Dark Souls?
My join date says 2012, when I made an account I promptly forgot about until August 2023, so I'm really *gasp* a newbie. :)
I have no phobias or disliked critters. Feel free to click anything in my keep, except the "Quests" tab. I think you'll find plenty there without those 2 or 3.

What I'm saying refers to the first game, we've only played the first one.

I think anyone could play if they put their minds to it more or less but what matters is that you enjoy the time spent playing. I genuinely don't recommend the game at face value unless you have a guide or an experienced friend. Or if you're just already okay with a lot of trial and error. Like, a lot. There's no shame in trying it, at the very least, if you're interested.

The game does ask for reaction time and left-right coordination; the shoulder buttons on a controller are your shield and your weapon in most situations. (it does depend on your choice of combat, though) I'd argue it doesn't ask for reflexes on the same level as a racing or arcade-like fighting game, but biding your time, reacting well to attacks (dodging or counter attacking), and timing are major points of the combat, which is something you'll be doing for the entire game from start to finish.

I do think the difficulty is a tad overblown but there are definitely some parts that cross from difficulty into badly designed that can then go into feeling unfair. There's weird design quirks, there's lots of stuff that genuinely makes me fully understand somebody putting the game down and never picking it up again.

The game is extremely near and dear to my heart but I am very biased for a number of personal reasons. It hasn't aged well, the Remaster is overpriced to hell and back. It's a great game in my eyes, but it is absolutely not for everybody, nor the most accessible of games out there.

I think you could play it, because I think anyone could with enough patience and practice, but also be prepared for a long game that asks for quite a bit of dedication and time, both in the art of becoming better at it and the length of it, itself.

But you never know. The worst that could happen is that you try it and it just ends up being not for you. c:>

The Remaster price (since I only have a PC ATM) was what was making me think twice. I played FFI where you had to grind about 500 ogres to get enough gear to tackle the first dungeon, so I'm not averse to trial and error and having to grind to advance. I just worried that it was jump, twist, dodge, hit all at once, which is where it becomes hard for me. Diablo was a nightmare, for instance. I think I'll wait to see if I can find it somewhere for less money or wait for a sale, because $35 for something I physically can't play would be horrible (I live on a fixed income).

Ah, hearing that, this game's difficulty and trial and error gameplay loop probably can't stop you, at least. XD

Yeah, the Remaster's price is a damn travesty. It doesn't go on sale very often either, but it's more or less the most stable version out there, at least. (as in, the framerate doesn't become a damn slideshow in a certain area... XD) The first game is methodical and slow in comparison to the next two entries. Dark Souls III is much faster in terms of combat pace and what it asks for in real-time reactions.

There actually is no jump button (there's a combination for leaping but you only ever need to really do that maybe a few times), and the game doesn't really ask you to dodge + attack at the same time. You're moreso attacking at windows of opportunity, blocking with your shield or dodging in between that, and attacking again at the best chance.

Definitely wait for a possible sale, though. The base price is ridiculous for a glorified port. D:

Edit: Just a bit of advice though, if you do plan to play it, play it in offline mode. (the game is always-online otherwise because of how its multiplayer works, if you choose to be online at all times, in most areas you have a chance of being forced into PVP, which is called being invaded)

Zullie's cool! I recommend a lot of VaatiVidya's older stuff, TerraMantis (not sure if they still make FromSoft lore videos but they have older ones) and this.

I'm afraid to ask what counts as retro nowadays :t-xD: Let's go with Nintendo 64 games, I adored Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask but I also put a lot of time into Battletanx: Global Assault and Perfect Dark (it's better than Goldeneye, fight me! )
