This place is pretty much dead, right? I'd love to join regardless, maybe browse through some reading lists. Then again, the local library is poorly stocked, so even if I see something here I might like chances are high they won't have it. They don't even have the Neil Gaiman books I want to read. :t-:(

I love books, let me in!

Favourite books/authors/genres: Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, anything really
Recommend ONE book! Tell us why it’s great! I recommend American Gods by Neil Gaiman. It is a mix of mythology, fantasy, mystery, and more. It is a wonderful book about the Gods of Old, the Gods of New, a man named Shadow, and a war that may tear our world apart. I have read it THREE times and love it!

Favorite books/authors/genres:I like Terry Pratchett's books,Orson Scott Card,James P. Blaylock,Tim Powers,
all those fantasy authors. My favourite books are The Color of Magic,The Light Fantastic, and Mort. I am also a fan of Card's Pathfinder series.
Recommend one book! Why is it great?: Definitely the Color of Magic. It's the start of the Discworld, and has a great plotline. It is about the Disc's first tourist.
I am reading Guards!Guards! by Terry Pratchett right now. Very interesting plot, and quite realistic.

Guards! Guards! was the first Terry Pratchett book I read. Loved it.

It seems this thread has died a slow, painful death, but just in case anyone happens to be around...

I'm reading the 8th book of The Malazan Book of the Fallen currently, as well as The Wise Man's Fear. I also picked up A Sorcerer and a Gentleman by Elizabeth Willey not too long ago (yes, I have the tendency to read multiple books at once). The last reminds me of a mature Diana Wynne Jones, whom I love, so I'm hoping it ends well.

Recommend ONE book! Tell us why it's great! Throne of Glass, by Sarah J. Maas. That book is AWESOME, people. Female assassin who's a sort of reluctant heroine, and it's got tiny threads of magic weaved into it as well. I think it's going to be a trilogy :3

@Nella: Oh my GOD. I love The Wise Man's Fear - I actually finished it a few weeks ago. At least, I hope you're talking about Kvothe and his adventures. xD Where are you now?

Ah, darnit. I'm dying to tell you what happens afterwards, but you'll be pretty shocked yourself anyway. xD I love it how he makes friends with that old guy though (forgot his name, dangit, started with a B), and generally manages to piss off almost everyone he talks to xD

Shocking things are good. So far all this foreshadowing business is kind of making me worried for when he returns to that one rich dude, the Maer...

And yes, I love Kvothe. He's the perfect balance of a temperamental, arrogant teenager without being annoying.

You've read past this part then, definitely, where he has the huge argument with Denna and stuff xD I never really liked Denna, she struck me as super bitchy :derp: Well, I guess that's also part of my friend's influence rubbing off on me, so yeah. But by the way, Tempi is AWESOME, man. Seriously. XD

If I didn't like The Naming of the Wind (too much of a Gary Stu, plus I just didn't like any of the flashback characters very much, the somewhat overly phoney society and sparse world building), would I like The Wise Man's Fear?

I've been trying to read The Inbetween People for the past four months. I don't think I've ever had so much trouble with a 176 page book. First, I'd like to say, it's absolutely stunning. My delay is by no means a negative review of the book. It just has a tendency to overwhelm me every few pages. The Inbetween People by Emma McEvoy can probably be best described as a cross between The Reluctant Fundamentalist and The History of Love. Like The Reluctant Fundamentalist, it tackles real world issues (the Israeli-Palestine conflict rather than Pakistani fundamentalism) with a wonderful soft lyricism that's heavily grounded in first person narration. But in a addition to that, like The History of Love, it goes beyond just one person's story with letters and well, history. But The Inbetween People is better than both of those books because all of it feels natural and none of it seems gimmicky.

I'm also reading Before Religion by Brent Nongbri as part of my "read more non-fiction" initiative. It reads like any academic article/journal/book, blargh, but the ideas are interesting. That the modern definition/thoughts on religion is indeed super modern, arising only in the past few centuries, and ancient "religions" are radically different and probably wouldn't be classified as a religion at all by modern standards.
