“Oh, Archmage Thane, I-I’m sorry!” The boy was carrying a shoulder bag with a host of plant sketches and samples falling out of the pockets. “I know I’m late to class, I was just putting my notes away in my room – well, that is, I know I shouldn’t have taken so long in the forest, but I ran into these creatures, see, and well I-I didn’t know what they were ‘cus I’d never seen them around the Keep, and then my pegasus got spooked and, well – I-I didn’t do anything, I swear, I was just going to my room and then to class, and then maybe after class I wanted to go to the Library to find out what those creatures were, but I’m late and I’m really, really sorry for that, and –“
“Calm down,” Archmage said gently. “Your name is Iaren, isn’t it? If you want to know what those creatures were, perhaps I can help. Could you describe them?”
Iaren looked around nervously, but took a slow breath and said, “One of them was… well it was an earth creature, tall, kind of burly. The features were made of some kind of stone – maybe granite? Marble? I’m not sure, exactly. It had a striking red crystal in its chest, I remember. It also seemed to have an affinity for leaves – orange and red and yellow, like maybe it was elusive so it would only come out in the autumn. I’m not sure, I can’t remember much else.”
“Hmm. What about the other one?”
“Okay, well that one was much different, a wind creature of some sort. I didn’t see much of it, but it was delicate – graceful, I’d say. It propelled itself through the air with a pair of wings, but then it also had two feet… talons? And then to match its set of wings, it also had two tails! It made a cry that was almost mournful, like it belonged to a flock.”
Thane thought for a minute before telling the student, “I have heard of these creatures before, but I am afraid I cannot remember their origins. I would like to send a request out to the magi of the Keep for help identifying them. Don’t worry, I’ll let your teachers know why you were held up from class.”
