Chapter One
A beautiful black cat sits in the ledge of a window, watching the proceedings below with great dignity. Larger than any normal feline, and as intelligent as any magi, it possesses great magic. Those are not the only differences that mark this creatures apart, though; nestled against its back is a pair of pale wings. These are silken soft to the touch, feathers as smooth as this cat's fur, and the same shade of color that tips its black tail and ears. The large feline turns to regard you, eyes, one green and one blue, full of knowledge. It inclines its head for a pat, rubbing a black cheek against your palm before turning to gaze out the window again. This being is the Black Winged-Cat. One who takes this cat for a companion is very sensitive, intelligent, or both. As graceful in flight as when walking, winged cats are stately beings, full of self-importance and pride. They are the favorite pets of the high ladies of Synara, free to roam where they will and treated with the utmost respect. The felines of Etain are their distant cousins, and they spend much of their time together, watching the kittens at play and hunting for small game. Winged cats are often seen on the roof of The Keep, sunning themselves sleepily, motionless except for a twitch of their tails now and then.
A young girl was sitting under the shade of an Emberleafed tree, reading a book. The landscape was covered in a blanket of snow. A large cat with silky white wings was beside her, softly murmuring the words on the page to his Magi.
"Fed up with the race's ignorance, Father Earth shook with fury and roared, "If it is beauty you seek, then allow me to aid you!" And the earth broke open, forcing the race to fall into the murky depths. He then turned them into the shimmering crystals we know as jewls. Some say that the race lives on as the elusive Crystalwing; Others say that the race is observing us through jewelry and learning our ways, as a plan to strike back." The Black Winged tomcat read in a deep, musky voice. As he neared the end of the story his Magi closed the book and stretched.
"Thank you for reading to me, Felix!" The girl chirped in a melodic voice like silk.
"It was a pleasure, my dear." The cat, Felix, flew upwards to match the girl's height. "Where shall we venture to today, Zoelle?" As he spoke, a warm feeling of joy overwhelmed both Pet and Magi; Angel the Svetku Lynx was drawing near. Zoelle looked up and sure enough a golden cat-like shape was gliding downward. "Oh, Angel!" Felix greeted, flying up. "What brings you here, my friend?"
Angel purred. "I was just returning to the Keep. Were you and Zoelle finishing your daily study?"
Felix nodded. "We were learning about the Legend of the Gems. It was a fine story."
The golden she-cat was a close friend of the Black Winged-Cat. Her pointy ears had a darker tint that matched the markings all over her fur. On her back was a brown and golden cloak, with magic golden wings peaking out of it. Her short tail was hidden under the cloak, but Felix knew that the tip was twitching with glee and the exhilaration of flight.
"As I would expect! Klara, from when I was just an egg, used to read it to me and my siblings." The Svetku Lynx's whiskers twitched; She hardly remembered her days at the Arkenian Trading post. This was just a small fib.
Felix didn't buy it. "Of course she did." He rolled his blue and green eyes.
Angel scoffed, pretending to be offended and putting a paw over her jaws just like humans do. "How dare you question me!" She crossly tossed her head over her left shoulder.
Felix shook his pelt. "Okay, you drama-queen." He mrrowed at his cat pun. "Well, I must leave. Goodbye, Angel!"
