Is there a guide to Magistream's style?

I think most of the pets are made by having a greyscale art layer, and then color, but I'd like to see if any of the official artists has progress pics of one of their pieces, or a guide to what settings to use on the layers.

Maybe one of the artists can give me a few pointers?
